If you look at some of the everyday terms/phrases/words we use, you start to see that many of them make almost no sense. Or rather, not the words, the things we add onto them.

Such as the prefix "pre-". For example, many TV dinners are "preheated." Well, what exactly does that mean? Heated before it's heated? It makes no sense.

Also, at airports, they say "We are now preboarding those passangers with..." Which also makes no sense. You can't get on before you get on.

Think of some things you say every day and post your thoughts on them.

And yes, this is a huge George Carlin reference. =3

Yea, I'm in Latin and I've noticed that some english derivatives have completely different meanings from the latin words :[

Not even the derivatives; we say things like "irregardless." Which is never meant the way it is used. LOL

Yea, it's weird how a lot of these words don't always make 100% sense. Latin is weird I suppose. And George Carlin references are always relevant. xD

I say like all the time, which barley makes sense when I use it in a sentence. What's up doesn't really make sense to me, but I don't say that. I use grammar when I talk, so I don't sound stupid.

That reminds me of how a girl talks to a guy, or anyother person. Where I live, girls have these really high-pitched southern sounding voice when they talk to guy they like, and whne normally, they talk with a deeper, maybe an accent. I catch myself doing that all the time.
My english teacher always corrects us when we speak something wrong, and I sometimes correct people. I wish I wasn't so bossy. /:

Me too. Also a lot of med terms do that. Like Anosmia breaks down to be "Without nose condition" when it really means "Lack of ability to smell"

Well, bear in mind pre- has several functions.

Pre- can be used in the context where it simply precedes something (oh my, using another pre-word) in matter of degree or order, but this not in regards to the verb it's attached to, but rather the direct or indirect object of the sentence.

In this sense, "preboarding passengers with [First Class business tickets]" for example, it simply means that passengers with Firs Class business tickets take precedence (yet another!) over the others in the order of the boarding process.

To preheat something simply means to "heat beforehand". So to rephrase, to preheat your dinner simply means to "heat your dinner beforehand". This is also why in many baking recipes, the phrase "Preheat the oven" is a common one. It simply means to heat your oven in advance in preparation for another step.

Pre- does mean 'before', but in 'preheated dinner', pre- refers more to the order in which the heating is done in regards to the dinner. With 'preboarding the passengers', pre- refers to the order in which boarding occurs in regards to the passengers, not the actual action of boarding.

Just to exhaust another example, I'm sure you're all familiar with the phrase "pre-ordering video games". Again, in this context, you're 'ordering the game in advance', not so much that you're 'ordering before you're ordering'.

I think it's strange that we still call movies "Movies"...as if it's still a fantastical concept that there are moving picture shows
