The Sanctuary

"I'm a bit partial to meat, but...otherwise I'll eat anything too. Let's just find whatever restaurant we can," Rei said. She coughed, swearing. "Damn this weather..."

'What do I need to do' he thought. He just wanted to get this done and over with. Already, he felt like he was too vulnerable, so he figured that since he'd be uncomforatable anyway, he might as well just do as told. Though his pride was taking a hit from this.

 

"Oh hai!" Larenxo said excited voice.

"Is that you father? What a surprise. I thought you found a rock to crawl under and die in. I have to admit, this is one damn fine rock. And you even took in Eva. My my Director, you really let yourself go."


"Enough!" Victor shouted, taking ame with his shotgun.

"You have no right to talk, you have no right to even exist!"


"oh really?" Kendrith's son replied. "If I remember correctly, that is what you claimed for that girl of yours, and all those who live in this city."

 

She could taste the excitement in the room, literally taste all the emotions, like blood running down her throat. Trying to keep quiet, she padded silently through the shadows, to the other side of where Victor was, her eyes glowing slightly in the darkness.

 

Victor trembled, his finger rattling against the trigger. Could he do this? Could he actually kill his own son again? Fear and guilt pushed him down farther as Larenzo's words cut through his courage and resolve.

 

Eva pushed her blunt cat head against his lead, trying to comfort him. She wished she was telepathetic, but she didn't need these two to see her naked, least of all him. A purr rumbling in her chest, she licked his hand, looking up at Kendrith, her foster father with green gold eyes. She did trust him, after all.

 

Leon continued walking, seeing what he thought was a restaurant in the distance. "Your not used to weather not like that of the north?", he asked noticing her cursing and coughing.

 

"Yeah," Rei said, walking alongside him, "It's been quite some time since I was last in this sort of climate. About two years, I think. Guess you could say I've been running from ghosts since then, as much as I hate to actually admit that."

 

"Makes sense I guess, alot of people who come here looking like us seem to be hiding", Leon responded as they walked in conversation.

 

"I wonder if they've gone through similar things that I have...and that I know you have as well," she said, looking at him. "One doesn't get the kind of injuries you had from falling over."

 

Leon remained silent for a moment but his walking didn't falter. "We're all hiding from something", he said before returning to his silence again.

 

"Ain't that the truth," Rei said. After a few moments of silence, she added, "And maybe we're hiding from the same thing."

Victor closed his eyes, feeling Eva's head against his thigh. She was right. He killed Larenzo once before, he could do it again. Eva was his new child and a father must protect his daughter. Gritting his teeth, he pulled the trigger, aiming for his former son's chest.

 

"Who knows", Leon replied shrugging slightly also making some feathers fall off his snow white wings. "This place must be crawling with people from the same place as me. Though, it was quite a walk from here", he thought aloud. It was obvious he doesn't use his wings much from the statement of him walking to this town.

 

Rei watched several feathers fall from his wings.
"I thought you said you didn't remember where you're from?" she asked.
"And you said you walked...I'm guessing that means you don't really use your wings much, then."
Looking ahead, she continued quietly, "It was a long walk from where I was too...but it was worth getting away from there."

 

"It's not where I'm from, it's just where I was", Leon replied then tried focusing on Rei's past to get away from his own, "Your from the north right? What was it like there and why did you want to escape it?", he asked.

 

"Ah, I see. Well, to be honest, I wasn't born in the North, I've just been living there for the past two years. It's...cold. Not much life or enforcement, so it's a prime place for criminals and the like to hide. I made a living by tracking those people down and turning them in," she sighed, and continued, "But that's not to say they actually liked me there. I was just the only thing that could track people through blizzards and stand the cold."
Rei looked back at Leon. "And it's not the North I escaped from. It was something far worse, more like Hell than anything. About a month ago I was in a local pub and I overheard a few men talking of a 'town of freaks in the South', so I decided to investigate. I figured I could get some answers, or find a better life, something along those lines."

 

"Makes sense to me", Leon said after hearing Rei's story. "Your nose must also be helpful with avoiding those you don't want to find you? A perfect tool for hide and seek as I see it", he continued thinking aloud again before slowing down to a stop. They where infront of a restaurant.

 

Rei grinned slightly.
"I suppose you could say that, though my ears help as well. I can hear things most can't, but both senses can be a weakness. There's been more than one occasion where a strong scent or loud noise has screwed up one - or both - senses."
She stopped next to him. "Do you have a story to tell?"
