The Price of Living Forever

Kjerstie eyes wandered from person to person below as she watched them with fascination. She missed being out there with everyone, but everyone feared the ones without the vaccine who were sick. And even if she was better because of the vaccine... she would live forever and become one of the...

She trailed off in thought as someone caught her attention. There was a new girl down below, and she looked a little out of place. Like she was being wary of her surroundings. Curious, Kjestie kept observing the girl from where she was at, wondering where she was going to go.

 

Dante smiled as he pressed a button that made the rock block off the doorway. "Thank you. Are you hungry?"

 

Mya smiled and stepped it. Yes I actually am. Do you have anything to eat?

 

"How does soup sound?" he asked.

 

Helisi walked over to the side walk, wanting to avoid any of the children that were playing. She kept a nice slow pace, watching all of them with a faint smile. She couldn't resist the nostalgic feeling that was now building up within her. She turned her gaze away, soon looking up at the apartment buildings that were to the side. Her eyes darted up and down, seeing people out of their rooms. It was actually peaceful here, which was something she always wanted to see. This is nice. She thought. Helisi's attention soon landed on a young girl who was at what she could tell the third floor. She raised an eyebrow, noticing the girl was staring at her. Who is that...?

 

Kjerstie stiffened when the girl suddenly looked up at her. "Oops, she caught me." Kjerstie quickly smiled at the girl to show her that she didn't mean any harm and waved to her in a friendly like manner.

Just then, Kjerstie felt a sharp pain in her chest and froze. 'Not again... not out here...' Her throat started to feel like it was being clogged up, and Kjerstie swallowed harder to fight the feeling down. She suddenly felt her throat contract and then the coughing began. Kjerstie's shoulders shook with each cough while her chest felt like it was on fire. She lowered her hand and covered up her mouth with the crook of her arm while still using the other hand to clasp on the rail for support. It almost felt like she was going to loose her breath any minute, and that made her panic.

 

She smiled. That would be great.

 

OOC: I edited my OC because I thought something was a gun, and it was actualy just a type of bullet, so I changed the weapons, (I hope that is okay?)

Albert Einstein looked around the war room, it was actualy the basement of an old house in the forest, which he had re-fitted to be a combat command center, in case of a war against the humans. Unfourtunatly, he had been right.

As he looked around the room, he noticed it's main features, no windows, a large, round, metal table in the center of the room, with seven chairs around it, several computer monitors with data about battle strategy in them, a metal door which lead to the weapons cache, and the ladder which lead to the upstairs of the old, victorian styled house.

 

Helisi smiled back but that smile soon faded when she noticed something was wrong with the girl. She quickly sprinted up to the third floor, wanting to get there in time to save the girl. Once she was at the third floor, her chest was slightly burning from how fast she had ran. She looked around, finally spotting the young girl. Is she in the same condition I was in before? Helisi ignored the thought and quickly ran to the girl's side. "Hey!" she called. Helisi wrapped one arm around Kjerstie as she looked around the floor. Nobody else was here. She turned her attention towards the room numbers, her eyes darting back and forth, wondering which one was the girl's room. "Can you speak?" she quickly asked.

 

In between coughs, Kjerstie suddenly noticed that someone was by her side. They asked her if she could talk, and quickly took in big gulps of air. She knew what the person was going to ask her next, even without her saying anything. "Number three hundred, zero..." Kjerstie began to cough again, but this time more quietly. They were getting weaker, which meant the attack was starting to die down. Kjestie felt her legs began to weaken under her and took in bigger breaths to calm herself down. Someone was here to help, and that was all that matter at the moment. If the person wasn't there, things would be different.

 

Dante grabbed a few cans of soup. More like beef stu, but more soupy. He opened them and put it all in a pot on a stove. "Do you have a place of your own?"

 

Helisi turned around, seeing the number Kjerstie said right behind them. At least her room isn't too far away. She grabbed Kjerstie's hand and kept her arm around her, helping her walk over to the door. Helisi let go of Kjerstie's hand and grabbed the doorknob, turning it, glad it was unlocked. She grabbed the girl's hand again and helped her inside. Helisi quickly looked around, seeing a bedroom to her left. "Over here," she said towards Kjerstie. "Do you have any relatives?"

 

"Just my brother," Kjerstie said breathlessly. "But he's away..." Kjestie carefully made her way over into the bedroom and towards her bed. More like her prison. She stumbled a bit before reaching the bed and then plopped down on it, grateful to be laying on something instead of standing. Kjerstie then rolled over until she was facing the ceiling, taking in deep breaths of air to bringing her breathing back to normal. "Thank you... by the way..."

 

Helisi nodded in response to the girl's comment. She turned around, leaving the room and shortly afterward coming back with a damp cloth. She slightly leaned over the bed and put the cloth on Kjerstie's forward. "No problem," she muttered, taking a step away from the bed. She quietly stared at Kjerstie before putting her hands on her hips and quietly sighing. "Are you sick...?"

 

She looked down and sighed. Well I used to. But the people there drove me out since I wasn't human anymore. It's hard living for hundreds of years when you are a target.

 

Kjestie looked over at the girl... finally realizing who she was. She was the girl that she saw on the street earlier. 'And she helped me...' Kjerstie slowly smiled and nodded her head. "I am... I have the crescent moon mark..." Kjestie rolled up her sleeve on her left arm. There was the mark, plain as day. Kjestie then relaxed her hand on her stomach and closed her eyes, listening to her heart slowly go back to normal. It was almost taunting her, reminding her that it could stop almost any second. Kjerstie quickly searched her mind to focus on something else, still keeping her eyes closed. "We can't afford the vaccine," Kjerstie said quietly, "so my brother joined the UED... They promised to give him money if he served full time..." Kjerstie was about to dwell on the dark words 'what if' when she stopped herself. She had to be strong for her brother. She was going to live and make it.

 

Dante sloped what he was doing. "Don't listen to that. We are still human. You hear me? We are ALL still human except for the saveges the call us freaks!" His eyes widened. "I'm sorry... It's been awhile since i've had company..."

 

She shook her head. It's alright. I understand how you feel.

 

Helisi raised an eyebrow, listening to what Kjerstie was saying. She was just hoping the girl would only have like a cold or something and not the Crescent Loom. She wouldn't want another person to have to go through the same thing she was practically going through. Helisi looked at the marking before turning her gaze back on the girl. "I'm sorry to hear that," she sighed. "For how long have you been sick?"

 

Dante continued making the soup. "It's almost done. Would you like something to drink too?" he asked, trying to change the subject.
