The gaming industry could stand to ask itself this more often

Freedom is for people egotistical enough to think they always know what's best
Guns are good for shooting bullets
Apple pie has nothing on pumpkin pie

If you're not at least egotistical enough to want to make your own choices most of the time, there's something seriously wrong with you. There's a difference between being free and being too stupid to recognize when you don't know what's best. Choosing not to be free makes you a slave, not a person.
But they don't have to have bullets in them to be useful! If you take a few unloaded handguns, weld them to a metal bar, and attach a couple of wooden boards, you can make a really nice spice rack!
And both are terrible compared to peanut butter pie. Apple Pie is still the best name for a ship, though.

Itunes and Steam both disagree, they are, to the public a godsend not a problem. I think last I read, 48% of music is bought digitally, and gaming digital sales aren't that far behind considering they've only recently become very attractive to the public as a way to get games. Think about Minecraft, that game took years to release the finished product but sold a couple million whilst it was in Alpha and Beta. Digital is on the rise.

Like libre says, you preload the game so it's playable on release, but you don't have access to it till the midnight launch. I've preloaded Batman Arkham Origins through Steam, it peloaded on monday. And this has been convenient, because the PC and Nintendo console physical releases have all been postponed in the UK because of some sort of hard copy distribution issue. They won't get a release till the 11th of November as a result. I'd like a hard copy but i'm not really fussed, considering i'll have access to it earlier than the hard copy. And it's cheaper.

You're talking about a very early sort of securing your rights toyohr digital media. This will change and improve in time, DRM won't be this way forever, and accounts linked to games is already dealt with well in various distributors, andthe next gen consoles are definitely improving on this. It's not that bleak, it's just in a stage of infancy, and needs to grow. The Xbox One for sure will change a lot throughout its lifetime considering its digital downloaded side of things. Just takes time.

Guessing you're not a fan of Kickstarted games?

Kickstarted games lack a publisher, so it's a whole different world. I'm not a fan of most KS games, but that's because there's no quality assurance. Still, I can think of a few good games that used the tool. That said if a kickstarter dev went Phil Fish level of crazy and just outright canceled his game out of no where, people would have wasted their money. Rather if the game sucked or if the game maker was distant the whole process, people lost out on their money.

Boy, it's like there's an argument about this going on with each side presenting intellectual points about concept of ownership and publishers.

I'd hate for someone who claims to be a friend come in and just randomly be a dismissive asshole for no good reason.
