We put almost half as much money into our Call of Duty rip-off game as Call of Duty gets, but it's not as popular as Call of Duty, the people just keep playing Call of Duty, why won't they play our game that's trying to be Call of Duty but isn't as good.

I know, let's continue trying to out Call of Duty Call of Duty instead of appealing to a different market.

    Also microtransactions.

Actually the funny part is CoD is the series re-using assets, rebranding old mechanics and abstractions, and generally cutting corners and it's still leading the market against a lot of look-alikes that spend twice as much for half the sales

so... good fuckin' job guys you're trying to beat them at a game they're not even playing

And it all boils down to; why would someone play a Call of Duty knock-off when they already have Call of Duty?

The thing is, outside of Battlefield which has a reason to exist, I can't think of many games that tried to knock off CoD in recent years.

It's true, they're waning, it's still relevant enough to be a thing. I blame call of duty for the ridiculous "need" to shoehorn multiplayer into everything nowadays (even if things have been getting more creative, like Assassin's Creed, there are still your Dead Space 2's out there).

It's not so much strictly a "call of duty" thing, though, more of a commentary on the attitude of most publishers, keep doing what everyone else is doing because they're making more money.

It better applies to pretty much any run of the mill MMO that isn't WoW. Though, even then, we've been seeing some fresher perspectives, like how Tera fits the mold but the battle system is more of a hack and slasher than your general "double-click once to attack until either you or the baddie falls down"

Half of the blame lies with the consumers, though, we need to stop buying the horse armor and preordering DLC that isn't even planned to exist yet or preordering digital download games.

America, stop giving publishers money for things they haven't made yet.

Doesn't stop them from spending ridiculous sums putting licensed music and horse mo cap into their campaign mode
And having a list of credits that outnumbers the population of most cities

Online multiplayer is on the rise for consoles because of more stable and widespread internet users, not just because of CoD's popularity as a multiplayer centric game. It was going to go this way for a while, and it's begun.

that last one, you're talking about PC gaming suppliers these days, look at Steam, it does it well and now consoles are catching up to them. Digital is the future.

Have you seen Assassin's Creed? Daaaaaaaaamn, son.

Digital isn't the future, it's a problem. But that's a different conversation. What I want to say is how DUMB it is to reserve something that doesn't physically exist. There's no other reason to pre-order other than "bonuses" besides reserving a copy... HELLO THERE'S AN INFINITE AMOUNT. IT'S DIGITAL.
