Some of you may have heard of this, a lot probably haven't. It's a relatively old story but one I find to be cool nonetheless.

    So. Meet God.

This is a Helix Nebula, a cloud of dust created from the remains of a destroyed asteroid found quite far away from earth, but still being only 700 light years.(Making it one of the closest planetary Nebulae to Earth in all the universe). When this image was found in 2003, (the nebula itself having been discovered long ago) a lot of people freaked and thought, "That's the eye of god looking at us through space!". It was reported by many Religious institutions and churches that this was 100% proof that god was real, and that this was him in a physical form. That's where my memory bests me. I can't remember what happened after that, but I can tell you that's no eye of the creator.

    Thoughts?

Like you said, it's a cloud of dust. Nothing more. Nothing less. Whoever though that that nebula was the eye of God was most likely a major fire and brimstone Catholic.

It's like something from Lord of the Rings whats his name, Sauron?

But still (IMO) this is not a sign of god, I have a different theory.

People see what they want to see. Just shows how desparate the church is to try to prove themselves right. Expecially considering god is supposedly nothing without faith and if there is definite proof then there is no need for faith (hence destroying god).

It's shiny dust. Yeah, it looks kinda like an eye, but I wouldn't say it's the Lord's eye.

Heck, how does the church know it's not Satan's eye? Or some humongous peeping tom? (Just throwin' that out there). The church jumps at every chance they get to prove God is real. I don't mean to sound arrogant, as a matter of fact I believe in God, but WOW those people need a life. It's only a frickin cloud of dust.

Also, I don't appreciate how some people categorize all Catholics as religious over-activists.

A cool formation to see, but I don't think it is the eye of God.

That is in no way physical proof of God. It is a coincidence that it looks like an eye, and if it truely was some sort of super eye thing who is to say it's God's? It could be one of Stevie Wonder's eyes for all they know.

Who says God can't be that big? If you believe in God then you should know that God takes any form he pleases.

A little wrong there. By saying that the Church did not "destroy" God. I believe God exists and that would end up being a physical imposiblility. People who believe that the formation is the "eye of God" are just saying that because:
    1. It looks like an eye.
    2. It's gigantic and unsual.
    3. Why not?
They're not desperate, just saying that it's a possiblility that it really could be the eye of God. The Church isn't desperate when they say that...since just about anything is possible, it really could be the eye of God. Although I doubt that...unless God comes out of nowhere and says that it's his eye or something like that...I bet it's just a coincidence that is an eye.

Sooo...yeah...it's just pretty space dust. VERY awesome looking. =D

The Helix Nebula is very beautiful. It could inspire anyone to think it's an eye looking about. It's amazing how dust and debris can turn out to look like that through our eyes. As for people trying to say it -is- an actual eye of God or anything, I can see things in clouds at times, which most people can, and would not say it's what it appears to be since I do know it's a cloud. We do have our imaginations though and sometimes they are proved to be quite wrong. Regardless, I'm kind of glad it's not something more than a colorful dust cloud because that would be kind of weird.

Doesn't the Bible say that Joseph is the only one who has ever seen God... so... he is glowing in heaven right? And noone else is...
I don't think it's God, because they haven't reported any random men glowing o-o

Of course it's not the eye of god.God was created in minds of people to sooth the insecurity of people and to maintain a control of people from the inside.Do people honestly think that there something that is all around us orcistrating everything around us and watches over everyone? It's naive to think so and it's bordering on delusional.Religion was the law of this world along the course of history but now that people think in a much higher manner and can see that things that were explained as god actually are
explained easily enough.God no longer has a place in this world for, no one belives in him.The laws said to be set down by him crumble and new law has come to take this crumbling world we call home...

Well, it looks bloody cool, I give it that. It looks like an eye, it has beautiful contour and color, but it is no "eye of god."

What about the "Eye of Michael"? You know, Trigun? lawl

The church always says that he doesn't have a physical form, so really the whole thing doesn't make sense to me, the fact that the Church says all these things and then when something happens it has something to do with God.
I've never heard of this, and I'm disinterested with it.

A destroyed asteriod, leaving off dust to create a somewhat eye?
    WTF.
I say this isn't dust, it's "his" eye.
I mean, I never knew asteriods carried some type of blue within them.
    And white, where the hell?

    It's "his" eye. That's what I say.
