l33t is another way to write 1337 *note how similliar the letters are to the chosen numbers*, 1337 is concidered more "advanced". You pronounce it "elite" and it originates from strategy posts in games like Doom, I think it was.. lol, h4x, n00b etc originates from there. Now people just use it to seem smart or make fun of the ones that do think it makes them smarter. (mostly the latter, part of internet sarcasm)

 

Good to know...but still kind of odd.
