The main characters got nicknames from the local people, and one of them was 'the doleful one' (a.k.a. he looked sad). The women thought it was attractive, and they got sad themselves, because they couldn't comfort him, meaning that he could've 'comforted' the ladies himself.

The character who said it is the comic relief guy (luckily a very well done comic relief guy) and he rarely has anything intelligent to say. He does have a few deep moments though... (he's the same guy I'm quoting in my siggy, btw)​
