The 62000 euros DLC !

Most recently at E3, Peter Molyneux (Populous, Theme Park, Fable) has announced its latest foolishness. Curiosity, the first game he leads within studio 22 Cans, proposes a virtual object, more precisely a chisel, at the staggering price of 62,000 euros (Â£ 50,000).

Curiosity is a multiplayer experience revolving around a black cube whose heart hides a secret. All players will be equipped with chisels, more or less powerful, that they will use to attack the cube piece by piece in the hope of discovering what lies beneath the surface. Everybody sees the same cube and the effects of their mutual chisel blows ... but only the player giving the final blow can see what it contains.

The 62 000 euros chisel is the most effective of all and will therefore more be more likely to deliver the final blow. Players will of course be offered a range of efficiencies and chisels for various prices. Just a warning, this approach seems to be a shameless extortion of money ... which Molyneux denies :

"This represents a huge amount of money, certainly. But it's not to make profits, this is a test on the psychology of monetization" he argues in the magazine New Scientist' s microphone. If this offer will be part of a sort of psychological experiment on the monetary value of virtual elements - which is not devoid of interest in the absolute - we can not help suspecting that Molyneux' s alleged monetary disinterest is feigned. Whatever he may say, his coup could turn to raise a particularly large benefit for his studio.

Launched in a few weeks, this game and many more games only set the stage for a more important game, that Molyneux intends to release in two years. Finally a simple question: what of the famous engraver purchasers who would not get to see the inside the cube in spite of their investment? "This is part of the experience".

Did someone read this news elsewhere ? This source is not exactly reliable, and the only other source I found is in German (which I don' t speak a word of). I wouldn' t be surprised if that' s true. Hell, I wouldn' t even be surprised if people fell for it, monochrome paintings have been sold for even more money than that.

As a consumer I' m not sure I like the road where it would lead the industry though, although I guess the very existence of DLC is already a half-step in that direction ...
