Adding yet another entry to his impressive collection of recent interviews, RPG Site had the opportunity to sit down with Tai Yasue, the co-director of the two Kingdom Hearts games currently in development: Kingdom Hearts 2.5 HD Remix and Kingdom Hearts 3.

They set off by discussing the HD remasters the series is now touting, what 2.5 will include, plans for a Dream Drop Distance remaster, and the development process & decisions behind Kingdom Hearts 2.5. They finish off with some discussions about the future of Kingdom Hearts, like what worlds might appear in future games and whether any games might bridge the gap between Kingdom Hearts 2.5 and Kingdom Hearts 3.

I REALLY doubt anybody would have fretted if Re:Coded lost a few cutscenes, they already said they added a tonne of stuff and it was planned to be a lot shorter, those animators could have been incorporating the capes

Well there's an excuse if I ever heard one

It's still pretty sad to know that capes aren't going to be in this version of BBS. As to be expected from these kinds of interviews, there's nothing new here. THERE'S ONLY SO MUCH WE CAN BE EXCITED SQUARE.

So......That's a no on the capes then?

I can understand the capes not being in the cutscene animation. It could do some weird stuff. Maybe they could at least put it on when they are in there armor or mirage arena. Im also confused he said they couldn't do it because animation issues but then says they are experimenting with it?

"We have people from Tokyo and Osaka working together on Kingdom Hearts 2.5 and the important thing is that we teach new people who join the team what it means to be making Kingdom Hearts."

I really like hearing that. As much as I don't like there style I really want the OSAKA Team to get better.

"Birth By Sleep has a very active combat system that many enjoyed. It flowed more fluidly to the original two games. Will you be taking that sort of Birth by Sleep style forward in the future?"

Ew! For the love of God, no! No command decks. Combos is what KH combat is about not special attacks.

Well, at least we know why there aren't capes. Better that than to delay KH3 further. Also...

... Is it me, or is he hinting at the possibility of Sora having an armor with a cape in KH3 just like the BBS trio?

It'd almsot definitely be easier to retroactively add capes to the few scenes the armour is used than it would be tweak all the combat animations for each character. But what really bugs me is this WOULDN'T be that hard to do one way or another. They made THREE HOURS of new animated cutscenes as a bonus for Re:Coded, they can DEFINITELY tweak a few animations to make BBS the best it can be, especially if the capes are physics based

Wait, what variables? It's not like the capes would impact the gameplay. It's not like it's significnatly more likely to cause lag than them updating the models in the first place. Clipping might be an issues but... nobody really cares about clipping. Anyways, even if they don't do gameplay they could at least add it to the final cutscene for consistency's sake. Heck if THAT causesissues just make the final cutscene prerendered. Having capes in everything but the game the characters appear in just looks and seems awful

Capes in cutscenes would have their own animation to each movement the characters make. It may be easier to put them in if they were in gameplay. Unless they did realtime movements which would look awful. What I mean by realtime is like the hair of the main character in the PS3 game Heavenly Sword. I wouldn't say it is easy since none of us have ever made capes In a video game. It may sound easy if you wanna do it right and put it in cutscenes and battle it could take time.

They've been leaning toward the deck system for a while now. I do miss combos though. I always wished the combat would go deeper in that aspect but every game they get some newfangled deck thing

Why would the capes be interacting with the enemies? It's just a part of the character, just another animation. Especially if they choose to simply add a canned cap animation to the existing ones, which wouldn't be ideal, but if they're looking for an easy way to do it it's that. And yeah, just having it in cutscenes is weird, but you know what else is weird? Having capes in the intro, and KH2

Combos are all the power in the keyblade and weilder compared to a command.

Er... why? I mean, it'd be a cool detail if the enemies interacted with the cape, but it's far from necessary. So anyways, I tried looking up the Lingering Will's animations, and I couldn't find a reel of that, but from what I COULD see, the cape anmations in that fight are canned. If they're physics based then it was a huge waste of resources, because as far as I could tell the cape did the same thing every time.
And on the final point... weirder than watching the intro, seeing capes, and then the moment you start there are no capes?
