I was surprised not to find a thread for this already... So, it's J.J. Abrams and Steven Speilburg making one insane movie. I might see it today but i'm still debating about it. Any of you wanna see/have seen this?
I saw it a couple of weeks ago. It was good, like a mix between Cloverfield and E.T. But the monster isn't the whole point, more things happen in the film. But it's basically just a homage to classic movies from the 70's and 80's.
Lord yes I want to see this. It sounds super epic, and Spielberg FTW. Oh man I did not want to use commas in this post I'm sorry. But no it looks epic.
Just thought i'd say that I saw the movie a few hours ago. It's E.T. meets a horror-thriller. It's not what you'd expect from the beginning. Also, it just screams Steven Spielburg and J.J. Abrams from the way it's made.
Oh.... Eh. If you ask me, I've seen better, from each director separately. Also, did any of you stay after the credits to watch the full mini movie made by the kids?
I did. It was cute and adorable. It's exactly what you'd expect to be made by a ragtag group of kids in an undetermined time in the 70's for a little film festival.
:guns4:If any movie is like Cloverfield, it must die. I must see this for myself. Cloverfield was horrible. Good story, horrible everything else. I will bomb this movie if it is anything like cloverfield
I saw the movie a few hours ago. Spoiler It's another case where the trailer sells you one thing, but gives you something completely different. It was marketed more as a horror movie, but you get this sci-fi coming of age movie. I hear people saying that it's an homage to older movies, but I haven't seen many of those movies, so I cannot comment on that. I will say that the acting was very good. Dakota Fanning's sister was the best out of all of them. The monologue she says at the train station for the movie had me in tears. I went in wanting to see a horror movie, but came out a little confused, but I very much enjoyed it. The monster did remind me a lot about Cloverfield and the monster that was in it. In fact, I think that monster could actually be related to the one in Cloverfield. Through out the movie, I thought that this these movies would be somehow connected. They were both created with J.J. Abrams. The kids were very believable characters and the drama seemed very real. For a while, it felt like I was watching a movie like The Lion King; it had a grown up story that gently teaches one of the hard truths of life.
Tummer, you make some good points but... Spoiler The monster in Cloverfield started killing people right off the spot, while this one was only hostile after that ass-hole commender was hostile to him. Also he didn't let out freakish spider babies... They might've taken some design elements and just fixed it up a bit because I did see some similarities to the two. Elle Fanning is way more talented than her sister, in my opinion. When she went to the kid's house and told him the truth about his mother's accident, I started choking up. And finally, that part of the crash where they see blood was the most lawlin' part of the whole movie.
Spoiler Well, Abrams did say that the monster in Cloverfield was only a baby. Maybe it didn't understand what was going on. It was really just making its way through the city, and attacking only when it was attacked. However, it is a bit of a stretch to say that these are two related monsters; it's more of a thing that I like to believe because 1) I loved Cloverfield and 2) I'm a nerd. They probably just shared the same design qualities and nothing else.
Spoiler I saw Cloverfield when I was in elementary school... I was traumatized for like two weeks, man! It was kinda stupid that the people bitten by the spider-babies would explode, but the movie wasn't totally bad in my opinion... Anyway, they COULD be related, but the theme of it being captured on film DOES scream Cloverfield references, except that the tape wasn't stolen by the government and that Super 8 is sometime in the 70's while Cloverfield was more in the present day. Another thing is that the baby in Cloverfield fell right into the ocean. It didn't come in a ship. Maybe the Super 8 alien was just the Cloverfield alien's parent or something. I guess Abrams could try to find some connections, but to me they were just designed similarly.
An entertaining but forgettable hurricane of cliches and rehashes. Yes, we get it. The main character's mother is dead. Please stop milking that every ten minutes. And enough of the 'jump scares'. It's annoying, not scary. It captures of the feel of those 80's movies as intended, but nothing else, no substance. There's no vision or point of view behind it, no personality to the setting, characters or story. It practically feels more like a rip-off than an homage. Just put The Goonies, Explorers, E.T and Cloverfield in a blender, and you get this thing. You're better off just watching the first two movies. I will say this, though: That 'film' during the credits was EPIC. Totally worth it just for that.
I think its gonna be a great movie but ill wait for it to come out on redbox lol what i really wanna see is green lanturn now that looks cool.
It seems like one of those films that I'll go see if someone invites me but I'd rather watch something else. I did play the random demo that came with Portal 2 and that did interest me as I had no idea what was going on and I was interested to find out what would happen.
