And Then There Were None... Picked it up from the bookstore, synopsis was interesting enough. The premise was interesting. But I could not get past the first few chapters, the author's writing style was bland, bored me to tears and not even. The bulk of the story might be decent, but if the writer's style does not agree with me then I will not bother to read it. Now, the film adaptation? I'll consider.

If you want a real good thriller, read The Ripliad series. It is hands down the best out there.

I loved both Catcher in the Rye and Great Expectations. Holden was a horrible, horrible person, but I really liked having him as the main character. Though to be honest, I would love to write some fanfiction about Ackley.

Tentative reading list as of now:

House of Leaves - Technically finished; in "overtime" (It's a weird book)
Alchemy of Stone - Unfinished, intend to pick back up next
The Name of the Wind - Not started, have to keep this on the list or Makaze will kill me
Invisible Man - Nearly finished (last year), intend to re-read
    Good Omens - Not started

    ... c':

    Jiku angers better than me.

Glad we're all agreed, that shit is terrible. My stepdad tried to make me read it on grounds that it's a "classic." No, Ray Bradbury is classic. If CitR is classic anything, it's a classic example of how not to do it.

I've watched The Crucible, if that's the same thing. The screaming. D:

It's kind of the better experience if you ask me. It's a play, so obviously, it's something that should be seen instead of being read. It also depends on watch you watched exactly (a Hollywood movie, a low budget movie, a broadway performance, a school performance, etc.).

It didn't freak me out at all, actually. One or two moments gave me chills but I think it's blown out of proportion. It is a very unique book, but it elicits more emotions than would ordinarily be expected of horror. In fact, I wouldn't have called it such myself, if that hadn't been my impression from what people said of it. It does cause some basic haunted house paranoia in the beginning, but it never tries that hard to make the reader scared.

Actually, I'd say it tries a lot harder to make your brain explode than to impose fear upon it; this is definitely a Viewers Are Geniuses-type experience. Plays on everything from advanced psychology to ancient theories of the hero's journey and high mythological symbols, and beyond—some directly, some subtly. With this, naturally, comes a lot of primal fear, but like I said, it's not the sort that jumps off the page and nestles in your head. I've had more restless nights from your average creepypasta.

All that said, I have a weak third eye, so visualization is difficult for me. There are some pretty haunting elements, both of the visceral, gory variety and the superstitious, ethereal kind. It might only be my weakness that keeps books from scaring me. I dunno, definitely worth the read, grab a partner if you think it'll freak you out but I wouldn't be too worried about it. Either way, better to jump in and say you've done than to sit there fearing what could be a life-changing experience. In fact, you might find the story posing that dilemma to its characters...

Aw, shucks. <3 Well you're far more eloquent than I. I could learn a thing or two from it.

My friend said the same thing about Catcher In The Rye when I said I would be reading it!
    it's quite odd though... the beginning. The author uses 'and all' a lot and it's kind of annoying. Plus, the main character is really jumpy and confusing and his trail of thought is kind of weird - but that's what I get from the first few pages. I was excited to read it at first because of the summary they put on the reading list but now with all these negative reviews I'm just like, blaaaaarg ; ;

It's totally a matter of taste and we won't think less of you for liking it. I just happen to be one of the people that dislikes the kind of character development and plot arc that was followed in this story. It's frequently more popular with younger teens and people with mild to serious and possibly depression based misgivings about society and the world as we know it. Don't let our opinions ruin something you'd otherwise like.
