So, here's the problem. I have this DVD that normally shows the subtitles when in the DVD player, but when in the computer, subtitles don't appear and i have no idea why. Could my computer be missing some sort of codec or whatever?

Whether or not you have a certain codec has nothing to do with this. I'm just want to clear that up since a lot of people seem to think that anything wrong with a video instantly means it's a codec problem. Just making sure but have you tried checking to see if you haven't accidently turned the subtitles off?

Have you tried turning them on?

Have you tried with a different program?

Have you tried on a different player (e.g. A DVD player)?

There's no turn off/on option for the subtitles, they are just there. They appear on the DVD player but not in the computer.

And yeap, i tried with different programs.

Most programs have an on/off option for subtitles.

Does your computer display subs for other DVDs?

Silly me! I turned them on xD

Just a last question, if anyone can help me with this as well. I ripped this film but the subtitles don't appear in the ripped version. Could it have anything to do with the fact that they were turned off on the DVD?

    Anyway, thanks for the help.

What program did you rip the DVD with and did you compress the ripped footage into something else like .avi, .mp4 or some other file extension?

I used handbrake and i ripped them to mkv. I haven't compress any of those two films. I find it weird because the previous films i ripped kept their subtitles, but those two didn't. I know i said that before but could it be because i miss a codec? I search around the net and the only other thing that i have found this far as a solution, is the attempt to use a different program to take the subtitles out of the dvd's and then install them in the ripped versions.

Fiddle around with the options in Handbrake. There's an area where you choose the subtitles that go on the rip. Also, you can't get soft-subs on certain formats (althought MKV should be fine).

@P: Softs in mkv do have problems in certain players sometimes.

@P: Well yeah, i chose the one that says Greek subs but they don't appear. The only other option those two films have is the Foreign language which is supposed to be the choice when the subtitles are of the same language with that spoken in the movie.

@Kubo: So, if i choose to rip them to mp4 could it work?

It just occurred to me that when you choose the source file you have two options. One that is the DVD/ Video_TS folder and another that is G:/VIDEO_TS (movie title). Is there a difference? I always pick the second option.

If it's ok i'll take a couple of pics to show you what i mean.

Yeah try to rip them into mp4 and see if it works. My bet is it will.

Apparently all i had to do was to press the add button after choosing the track subtitles, which is strange because even though i didn't do so before, the subtitles appeared on the other films. Anyway, now now they appear on mkv.

So yeah, problem solved, case closed. Thanks for the help guys.
