    Every household connected to the internet has some form of modem. Some are integrated into routers but the alternative here is cable companies running Ethernet into households which is impractical considering you'd need a patch panel every 328ft. Depending on the company they'll either run coaxial or fiber as their backbone, almost never will they run STP Ethernet cables.
