    Man. This sucks...

I'm in seventh grade now, moving on to 8th very soon. I took band as my elective last year and this year. I'm great friends with my band teacher. I play the baritone horn in Concert band and Bass guitar in Jazz Band. It's pretty fun, but I'm not very good at the baritone. I really just need to improve my tone. But next year, I want to take a new 8th grade drama class. It sounds like a blast and I know I would rock in it... But my mom said I couldn't. She wants me to continue band. I don't think it should be up to her, even though she pays for me to go to that school... Don't any of you think that I should have my own choice?

Yeah. My mom thinks I can get a really good scholarship from band, but I really don't think so.

i kind of had the same thing. but it was a little different. i wanted to play drums, but my mom thought playing the flute would be more proper, since i was a girl and everything. reluctantly, i decided to play the flute. that was about 6 years ago and i've been playing the flute ever since. i'm really glad i didn't chose drums because i've won competitions and have even been a featured artist for festivals and things. but it was my mom's decision, not mine.

i think your mom is just trying to be helpful. i don't think she's thinking "hm, how can i personally go against his wishes?" my suggestion would be to talk with her and maybe make a pro/con list on your electives. tell her that even though band might have scholarships down the road, if you keep your grades up and do many different things, you'll get other scholarships. besides, you want to be well-rounded, so you need to do more than just play in the band.

but you have a choice. it's your life, not hers. she's just trying to help you out.

Anyways, I think do what you want. My mom got mad at me when I told her I wanted to stop doing soccer and do gymnastics, and i got my way. Ive improved rapodly and im competing at the same level as people who have been doing it sience they were three. But im hurt.... dang you knees and elbow.

Discuss it with your mom. If Drama is something you really, really want to take, keep trying to convince your mom to let you.

If you've been playing band for a long time now, you should stick with it.

Ergh, electives...stupid, stupid things. I'd reccommend doing the old fashioned eeny-meeny-miney-moe thing.

My new school only gives you one elective slot..and band fills it up for me. *looks sadly at her violin and french book* Bye guys...Hillbilly Hell is gonna suck...
