Anime is Japanese animation like cartoons we have in America. They involve people typically drawn in the style of manga and are always stories (not patchwork cartoons with random stories like we have) that continue through a series of episodesw that must be watched in order to understand.

You will find that a wide range of Anime is for a more...'mature' and 'older' audience than your ordinary cartoons. For example, Hellsing and Ghost In The Shell. These are some that are not suitable for your little brother/sister who is about 5 yrs old unless you wish to ensure that they have nightmares and wet their beds for the next three years.
