Stranded

Matt sighed. Seeing as to he wasn't gonna win this battle. He turned just in time to see Clarisse heading away and looked back at Raina. "Me and Miss Dubois are heading to search the island. We'll be back soon though." He opened his mouth to say something else but stopped. "I...I'll see you in a little."

He turned and rushed to Clarisse. "Let's head out, miss Clarisse."

 

"It's alright Matt, if you want to stay with Raina if you like. I won't separate you love birds. I think it's sweet."

 

Matt turned red. "Beggin' your pardon, miss Clarisse. But I don't think you understand. I'm a cabin boy, miss. And duty comes before...before friends..." He glanced over his shoulder at Raina.
'Why would she want me anyways? I'm poor. She's rich. We live in different worlds...'
"Now Clarisse, shall we go?"

 

Clarisse smiled. "You are only young for a while. Remember this, love conquers all obstacles and nothing is unreachable if you want it badly enough. A bird in a gilded cage is still in a cage."

 

Matt stood for a moment. He had to stop and think about what she had said. He shook his head. He'd mull it over later. Right now, they had a forest to search.

what am I thinking? y would he like me? I'm just a silly lil rich girl in his eyes...his beutiful eyes...

 

Matt began trudging through the forest, looking back to make sure Clarisse was still with him. She was actually doing better than himself. She may have been rich and pampered but she could certainly survive in the wilderness.

 

Clarisse kept an eye on Matt. He was tough but survival brought out repressed memories and hidden fears. She had been brought up a lot more toughly than Matt could ever imagine. Her family really did believe in survival of the fittest to the point they almost took it literally. When she got back things would change for the better.

 

Matt saw something in Clarisse's eyes and hesitated. "Quite alright there, miss Clarisse?"

 

"I was just thinking about how I was raised and thinking that things are going to change so that people are more important in the eyes of the Company."

 

Matt thought for a moment. "You...were raised into your job?"

 

"Pretty much so. We were raised with a 'survival of the fittest' attitude to business. This meant that we were raised to be cold and heartless. We were made to survive in every way possible, including like this. My childhood was anything but pampered and cosseted."

 

Matt nodded. "I'm with ya there." He mumbled, cutting an x into a tree to show they had been there. "When you say we...you mean your siblings or...?"

 

"I had a younger brother but he was lost on an expedition with my father in the Himalayas. I never believed he was dead but my father said that he was too weak to survive and left it at that. What about your past?"

 

Matt frowned a little. "I'm sorry about your brother..." He muttered. "And I don't really have a past myself. Captain found me alone on a life-boat whene I was three or something and he took me in. I've worked on the Albatross since then."

 

"Do you know where the lifeboat was?" Clarisse looked at Matt. The age would be right, but surely he wasn't Edward? That would be too much of a miracle.

 

"Er...sorry but I'm not really sure, miss Clarisse...I don't really remeber much about it. Perhaps the captain knows." He frowned apologetically for being unable to answer her question.

 

"Don't let it worry you. I'll ask the captain if you like and tell you what I learn. You deserve to know about yourself."
