MCR aren't a band I like but why should that matter. Most of my friends like them, and most of them aren't 'emo', so no-one should stereo type you over music.

What, like swimming and Hockey!? :D

Trust me it doesn't get any better as you get older. I am expected to act seriously all the time and if I say I play KH or any other PS2 game I get told to 'grow up' by quite a few people or looked at as if I'm odd. This is added to the fact that apparently I am eccentric due to the fact I like watching animation and take part in a lot of the fancy dress charity events. I get smiled at a lot in that sort of sympathetic way that people use when they aren't sure how to cope with you. At least here I'm treated as normal.

People don't stereotype me racially since I'm mixed so people don't know what i am so yeah i get some weird looks (I'm half white and half black..my skin color says I'm white but my hair makes people either think I'm Puerto Rican or mixed.) When someone dose stereotype me is because of the way i act....which is pretty much like an anime' character....and look like an emo....plus I'm an intellectual and for some strange reason my voice sound like a girl's voice, so when someone looks at me the first thing they think is that I'm gay. Which I'm not. I hate stereotyping :yelling:!

Stereotyping is just a way for people to sort things into groups. As others have mentioned in other topics, it is human nature to categorize things, including people. Sure, certain stereotypes can hurt people, but I've learned to just ignore it. I don't think people should go around classifying others by the way they dress, act or the music they listen to, but I don't think others should really take it to heart.

    I agree with everyone.

Sterotypes are stupid and its just human nature for people to think they are better then others.

The Nazis believed they were descendants of ancient and powerful race, and that all others were inferior to them, however adolf hitler joined the Nazi party because his abusive JEWISH father. The man used stereotypes he was fed and belived that were true to destroy his own people. Yes Adolf Hitler was half jewish.

Yes and he was brown haired and brown eyed. -.-

So even history is evolved around sterotypes.

Which probably means it isnt going to stop anytime soon.

The only thing that I like about stereotyping is that I can confuse the hell out of the people who want so badly to stereotype me cause I don't fit into any one group...

stereotypes exist, otherwise there would be no stereotypical anything, however stereotyping can be a rather mean thing to do, some people are proud of their stererotypes, those people happen to be few in number...

That is the only fun thing about stereotypes really is that I know that people always try to class me into one and I don't fit into their design. Then again, I really am under the impression that no one truly fits into a stereotype mold exactly and that we are all multi-dimensional. The only people that fit into stereotypes seem to be those who are really fighting to do so and make themselves more 2-dimensional from it.

I think that stereotypes are horrible things to do. People have rights, and don't need to be classified as to not be able to do, be the only person able to do things, etc. It can hurt people deeply, even though you may not see it. But Midnight Rose said something, that people may be proud of their stereotypes. Yes, very true, but it's not something to gloat about. Like I said, stereotyping can scar someone truly, and showing pride from being put into a category that other people put you in, isn't that considerate of how other people may feel.
When one stereotypes, you forget about how a person you 'categorized' would feel. Even worse is if you actually know how they would feel. If you yourself have been stereotyped, that really doesn't give you the right to stereotype other people also. Sometimes people use that to make themselves feel better about themselves, like what people do with insults.

That's is my view on stereotypes. Sorry if I was sort of redundant.

Stereotypes are based on the most extreme actions of any member of the group, which tends to always be a very small minority of the group. The whole group then gets classed that way and that's where the problem begins.

In many cases stereotypes end up being engrained in society and passed down through generations, ending up being very hard to shake off or change.

As has been mentioned, people stereotype because it's what the human brain does. It looks for patterns etc in the world around it in order to make sense of the chaos. So it looks for common traits between people to make more sense of humanity. It also makes talking about people easier by lumping someone into a common group.

Stereotyping is stupid; plain as that. I've gotten plenty people that've labeled me.

Since I'm half Chinese, people assume I'm some kind of supersmart mastermind that can solve a quadradic formula just by glancing at it. Guess what, I can't. Then their reaction is, "Are you really Asian?"

However, I'm also half Polish, and that recieves a LOT of negative comments. I've had people come up to me and tell Polish jokes, which to me, are mildly insulting.
When I do something rather stupid, I joke that my Polish side temporarily took over. But it's just that, a joke.

Another thing: I have a skin condition, called vitiligo. It's basically a loss of skin pigmentation; nothing serious. But, since I have white blotches on my hands, feet, knees, and elbows, some people tend to avoid me, as if getting in a half-foot radius would kill them. >_>
I suppose I can't blame them for not wanting to get near me, but it's not just that. They stare from where they stand, then walk away quickly.
    Several things I don't get:
    1) If it was a serious illness, why would I be outside?
    2) Why don't they ask? It's not like if you ask about it I'll chop your head off.

I tend to be very open about what vitiligo is, and if I catch someone staring too long, I ask, "Can I help you?"

My opinion is that stereotyping will always surround us, becaue some people think they need to feel superior to others.

Sterotyping only exists because of the people who are dumb enough not to realise how hurtful it can be.
