That's not really fair when the Dragon Quest games are increasing in popularity constantly while the Final Fantasy franchise is dropping like a rock. The games sell basically the same by now. Kingdom Hearts really isn't that popular anymore, though that might just be because Nomura is killing the franchise with unimportant installments on fourty different gaming systems. The Enix's IPs are really pulling their weight tbh.

Also, Square has always been known as Square, that was their original name, so I guess they might just want to go back to their roots.

I wonder if this is because of how negatively Square Enix sales have been going for the last year, seeing as no major installments in their franchises were released. This is probably an attempt to reinvent the company in order to grow again. I doubt that just this logo change and all will have an impact, they should be investing more in their game development and make sales.

I just call them SE usually because I can't be bothered with typing out their whole name, guess it'll have to be Square. Won't change my opinion about them, though if they wabt to push forward as a company they will need to get their head in gear.

This will take quite some getting used to, but it's not anything really major.

So long as they can keep their famous, long-running franchises going strong, i'm fine with a tiny name change.
After all, most people just call them “Square†anyway.

Well, iirc they were discussing refocusing not long ago, so perhaps this is part of that? haha

I've always liked the 'Enix' tacked on the end, I just think it's a cool sounding word. never been positive on how to pronounce it though
In the grand scheme of things, though, not a big deal.

I'd like to open another possibility. They've trademarked the name, but that doesn't mean that they're going to change Square Enix. It seems unlikely since it seems they've also just gotten another logo for the name. But it is a possibility.

I mean, a lot of people call them Square, so it'd seem smart to trademark it just in case. But it definitely could be that they're going for a new image.

Dislike. Enix is quirky and cool. Square is plain and boring. Square-Enix is the perfect balance, and can be verbally shortened to 'Square'. Killing the Enix completely seems unnecessary to me.

In terms of rebranding, simply removing Enix, which, from what I gather, has been relatively successful, won't do too much. It won't distance themselves from their past, or anything similar. It certainly won't reinvent the company.

So, it gets a thumbs-down from me.

This is strange, I wander why they have to change it, just like why did they change from Square Soft to Square Enix. To be honest, it's not going to make a huge difference, I don't care either way as long as they still produce the same quality games. I am curious to know why they don't want to keep the Enix part but whatever. Thanks for the update, I may have actually gotten confused had I not known xD

Another name change, huh? Well . . . I'll be a bit down to see the "Enix" go, but it is just a name. I know just "Square" is kinda plain, but it actually seems pretty unique if you think about it.

Oh well. It won't really change much though.

They went from Squaresoft to Square Enix because the company almost went down after The Spirits Within did horribly in the box office so they merged with Enix to save themselves and thus became Square-Enix.

As for the name change back to Square while it does make me wonder why they took out the Enix part, it doesn't really bother me much. As long as games are being made, I have no reason to complain xD

    Aw..I like the Enix.

Squaresoft was fine, Square-Enix = Rad. Square?....I can only think of ghoulish fiends who utilize square shaped containment devises as weapons.
Guess it doesn't matter, but still throws me off.

Why just Square ? Why didn't they change their name back to Squaresoft ? I'm surprised that the Enix part of the company isn't furious about this. The Enix history is going to be wiped, just because Final Fantasy isn't selling as it did in the 90's. Enix should move away and just let Squaresoft do their thing, epsically if they're planning to swallow up other gaming companies.

Whether they change their name or not will have no effect whatsoever on their decline. I say keep the name Square Enix because Square by itself just sounds plain boring or at least turn it back to Squaresoft. I also think that they might want to try making new franchises and taking risks instead of looking to the same three game series' for comfort. The World Ends With You was a breath of fresh air and I'd like to see something like that again.

Yeah, this is so true. I mean, Square Enix sounds so much cooler than just....Square. Here's an example of the two:
Square Enix --> "Hey, did you here Square Enix has come out with a new game? I heard it's really good"
Square --> "Did you hear? Square is making a new game that's supposed to be really good."

I mean, come on, who wants to go around talking about squares? Seriously, if someone didn't know what Square Enix was, or heck, if they change it, Square, then it'll sound silly

And yet there's a company, one of the most famous ones, named simply Apple, or at least that's what they're referred to.
Most people (that I know anyway) call Square Enix 'Square' for short. Hell, just look around the forum. I think it'll have very little effect on anything to be honest.

I wouldn't change the name, though, if it was me because 'Enix' does sound cooler. Hopefully, as someone mentioned, they're just trademarking "Square" so nobody tries to start a new company called Square in order to have name recognition and they'll still go by Square Enix.

@Misty and everyone else wondering pronunciation: I always called said it "E-nix" with a long E but in Duodecim, they pronounce it "Square Eh-nix"

Well, there are some things that work with simple things, like Apple, but Square Enix doesn't need a name change. oh, and I say it as Eh-nix. But can someone really make a company called Square while Square Enix is around?

That's a matter of opinion and nothing more. Square is a simple thing and it works to the point that the company is referred to as such on a regular basis. I would argue more people call them Square than people who call them Square Enix.

And as far as I know, it's likely that someone could unless that name was trademarked. I mean, they might get sued, but the case could go either way if "Square" wasn't trademarked.
