So it turns out Fluoride may have limited beneficial qualities as well as being toxic. Apparently this should outweigh the principle that free people have the right to decide what medication they receive. Instead the autorities in Hampshire (UK) have decided that it will be added to their water supply 'for their own good'.

Those against mass 'medication' (poisoning) can either start buying expensive bottled water, get filters or move out of the area. I find this situation abhorrent. Mass 'medication' has no regard to the needs of the 'patient' (victim) What is a recommended level for an adult drinking the water will not be safe for a child. If they are also using fluoride 'enriched' (poisoned) toothpaste then the damage caused can overweigh the benefits (that's why toothpaste manufacturers cover their asses by putting that warning on the back about consulting your doctor if taken with other supplements)

Wouldn't a more proportionate response be to give those people suffering from tooth decay a toothbrush and some paste or fluoride supplements instead of ingesting it in water? How can it be ethical to violate people's fundamental rights by mass 'medicating'?

    Unknown to the greater population, Sodium Fluoride;

    - Is a hazardous waste by-product of the nuclear, fertilizer and aluminum industries.

    - Was used by the Nazis to render prisoners more docile.

    - Is used as the active toxin in rat poison and commercial insecticide (particularly for cockroaches).

    - Is one of the primary ingredients found in Prozac, Sarin nerve gas, anaesthetics and in hypnotic, psychiatric and anti-depressant drugs, and to some extent in vaccinations.

    - Was banned by China when it was found to slow down children’s learning.

    - Shortens the human life span by a premature aging process.

    - Has alarmed numerous scientists, dentists and medical professionals after discoveries that it causes osteoporosis, bone cancer, Alzheimer’s and other aluminum based diseases.

    - Causes poisoning of the central nervous system especially the hippocampus.

    - Causes neuropathology and behavioural deficits as stated by Phyllis Mullenix, PhD international authority on toxicology.

    - Causes dental fluorosis, a discoloration of teeth caused by ingestion of excess fluoride during childhood and now reaching near-epidemic proportions in the U.S. and other fluoridated countries.

    - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency classified fluoride as more toxic than lead but less toxic than arsenic.

    - The U.S. Akron Regional Poison Centre indicates that a 7-ounce tube of toothpaste contains 199 mg. of fluoride, more than enough to kill a 25-pound child.

That's actually quite scary that they re just going to go ahead and do that, especially if it's that toxic. Is there anything that can be done to prevent it? Or are you just stuck buying water filters and the like to avoid contact with the fluoride?

Off topic, but there's so many typos on that poiso label I just lol'd. I can't "sekk" medical "advise".

Yeah, where I live, the Town Water is full of Fluoride. I've lived with toxic tap water my entire life, and I'm perfectly healthy. Plus, I've never had a cavity.

To be honest I've never noticed the tap water problem much where I live. Which is in Wisconsin. I've had a few cavities, but that was probably me on account of I used to forget to brush my teeth at times.

If it causes so many problems, the people should rebel. If not enough people rebel, clearly it isn't such a huge problem to them. Though, you'd think something like this would stir something up.

Same. When I was living in Illinois and Missouri, we had fluoride in all the water - to this day, all they have found with my teeth is one (pre-existing) tiny air pocket in one tooth. The stuff is only harmful if you ingest a lot of it.

What child WANTS to eat an ENTIRE tube of toothpaste?? I never even wanted to use ANY as a child, and neither did any of my brothers!

This is hype, pure and simple. The US has been putting fluoride in water for generations, and nothing bad has ever happened because of it.

O.O They shouldn't be allowed to do that! That is just wrong. Toothpaste makes me sick to my stomach, so if they put it in drinking water.....

That's just... wrong. Gross! I can't even imagine eating water like toothpaste and florade. Man... I feel sorry for those people, that must be really tough on them. Are they really trying to make the whole country sick and die? O.o

Wow. The ignorance in this post is staggering. It's not like all the water is going to become supersaturated with the stuff! it's just a small amount to strengthen teeth (and judging by British stereotypes, they really need it). They have been doing this in American cities for decades, with no ill effects whatsoever. I live in a place that uses it, and it's not even tasteable. In fact, I have yet to EVER have a cavity. Fluoride is harmless in the quantities they will be using.

I think the main problem people have with it is how do they know how much tap water people drink? You could still overdose on it (although if you drink enough water it will kill you on it's own >_>)

The OP does seem extremely biased against the idea to begin with.

But if I even swallow a little bit of toothpaste, I'm sick the rest of the day. Its not that its bad, its that people should know so they can judge whether they should drink tap water and how much they should drink.

    Eh.

I dunno why, this just really creeps be out.
I mean, if they do that...>< What if someone like...Really likes water and they overdose or something. It's still possible to overdose! D':

People should be able to chose whether they want to drink water like that, or not. That's just scary. It's poision.

    >w< What if they start doing stuff like that to actually kill us without letting us know and randomly all of these people just die? O_O

    I'm scared now.

As I said, drinking too much water can kill you. People getting worried over this are the people who are too scared to go outside in case they get hit by a bus.

Try and live a little people, this is to help your dental health so that you don't have to go to the dentist so often saving yourself (and the taxpayer) a lot of money.

Seriously? Are you THAT paranoid? There is a quote by an early scientist: "Everything is poisonous, and yet there is nothing poisonous. Only the dose makes a thing poisonous". There is so little of the stuff in the water that even if you drank 10 gallons of it, you wouldn't die (unless, of course, 10 gallons of water makes you die even without the fluoride - water can kill you if an insane amount is ingested, but I have yet to hear of a single documented case of it). I drink more water than anyone I know - I am almost constantly drinking water, drinking flavored water, or chewing on ice - all with fluorine in it - and guess what? I'm not dead. Ill make it easy to understand:
Fluoride... In... Water... Is... Not... Poisonous!

A woman in England who was on a meal replacement diet (where you drink water instead of eating some meals) drank 4 litres of water in under 2 hours and died.

Well, fine, so it takes a lot less water than I thought to kill. Even so, it wasn't fluoride that killed her, it was a foolish, hare-brained diet. I have felt that solid feeling in my stomach mentioned in the article before, and when it happens, I, like most other normal, rational people, stop drinking.

I know that isn't what you were saying, I was just pointing out that it would almost be more likely that the excessive water consumption would kill you than the fluoride.

In the American Southwest about 2 years ago, there was a radio program hosting a Water-drinking contest for some trivial prize. Dozens of people called in and said "Hey guys, people can die from this!", but the station didn't listen, the woman who won died on her way home.

Ok, so there are documented cases. I guess they didn't attract much national/international attention. Still, no mention of fluoride poisoning.
