There's almost certainly been a thread for this somewhere on the forums, but it seems it's not a topic that's been touched on too much recently. So for you fellow music fans/buffs, I figured I'd kindle up some soundtrack talk. Bear in mind when I say it that I mean soundracks as in musical scores originally comissioned for the purpose of accompanying a movie, TV show, video game, etc. Your favorite soundtracks? Favorite composer that's done soundtrack work? It's an open floor really. Just have at it.

Allow me to break the ice by starting with mention to my overall favorite composer from the film industry: Hans Zimmer, probably most likely to be best recognized (these days) as the composer for such movies as Pirates of the Caribbean ((uncredited in the first movie)), Batman Begins & The Dark Knight ((with James Newton Howard)), to name some of his more recent, and probably better known works. Easily, he's one of (if not outright) the best film composers that I've known of.

The Book of Eli. Hands down. Atticus Ross did an amazing job of capturing the gritty, post apocalyptic ambient.

I listened to a few tracks from that last night. It is a pretty epic soundtrack, I must say. Makes want to watch the movie, when I get the chance to.

Provided that it's one in which the music was (for the most part) original to the movie. That's really the area that I'd like to see covered.

For games, all KH and FF soundtracks, naturally. I also really like the music for the Assassin's Creed and Halo series.

For movies, most Disney films along with Star Wars. I also like some of the stuff from Spiderman.

And I don't really listen to the soundtrack but I could listen to the opening theme of Doctor Who on a loop for a hours.

I adore soundtrack music. It's what I listen to when I'm drawing or writing. For some reason that really gets my muses inspired.

These are in my collection at the moment, but I'm always looking for suggestions.

    Movies:
    The Lion King
    The Lion King II
The Lion King: Rhythm of the Pride Lands (okay, not really a soundtrack but the music was inspired by the movie, and the collection was put together by Lebo M, one of the major inspirations behind the music in the movie and the Broadway show)
    Tarzan
    Balto
    Balto II
    Balto III
    Avatar
    The first 3 Pirates movies
Daredevil (movie stank IMHO, but the music that was released for the film, which featured Evanescence, Hoobastank, Rob Zombie, and a few others was pretty good)

    Games:
    FF VII
    Banjo Kazooie
    Banjo Tooie
    Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
    KH
    KHII
    Super Mario Galaxy

John Powell, John Williams, Alan Menken, and Hans Zimmer are probably my favourites. Although I do enjoy many others as well.

John Powell is, in my opinion, quite underrated. His music isn't always extravagant, but I love his melodies. He's certainly better than Trent Reznor. :B|: *holds Academy Awards grudge* :
    - How to Train Your Dragon (he's going to score the second HTTYD movie, I'm so excitedddddddd)
    - P.S. I Love You (<- I often have this playing when I go to sleep c: )
    - Kung Fu Panda
    - Shrek

John Williams pretty much goes without saying, but anyhow:
    - Harry Potter (I think he scored 1-3)
    - Schindler's List
    - Star Wars
    - Angela's Ashes
    - Jurassic Park
    - E.T.
    - Jaws
    - need I go on...

Alan Menken. Famous composer for Disney, and I think he's brilliant:
    - The Hunchback of Notre Dame
    - Pocahontas
    - Beauty and the Beast
    - The Little Mermaid
    - Tangled

Hans Zimmer. Brilliant for most movies. Unimpressed by others. But still love him. And a lot of his track titles make me chuckle:
    - The Lion King
    - Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron
    - Pirates of the Caribbean
    - Sherlock Holmes
    - Rango
    - The Prince of Egypt

I'm also quite fond of Harry Gregson-Williams:
    - Shrek
    - The Chronicles of Narnia
    - Chicken Run

And Carter Burwell (I for serious didn't even know that he scored Twilight until I looked at his IMDb page, and I wish I didn't know ;_; ) :
    - In Bruges
    - A Knight's Tale
    - Where the Wild Things Are
    - True Grit

Miscellaneously, I really love the Titanic soundtrack, but otherwise I'm not completely astounded by James Horner's other work that I've heard. I don't really know why I'm not a fan of the Avatar soundtrack. The best way for me to describe it is that I guess don't like the ensemble of instruments used. :/

John Williams is a good one. And yes, He was the composer for the 3rd Harry Potter film. I actually wasn't too sure of that one myself until I looked it up, since the 3rd one was where the started changing a lot of the design for the series (which actually brought things in kind of a sloppy direction, I think, at least for the 3rd movie, and a bit for the sixth, but that's not a conversation for here). The Williams' tracks for HP were definately the more memorable ones though. I think the main theme he wrote for it pretty much became synonymous with the franchise in general.

I can't put my finger on too many other film composers though. Danny Elfman did a good job with a lot of his scores. The Tim Burton Batman movies had some good tracks to them, and Elfman also wrote the score for Nightmare Before Christmas, which was also a good one. So I can't complain about him. I'd also give James Horner props, if nothing else, for the score to the original Land Before Time, before they wen't and turned the movies into musicals. In retrospect, the musical bits from the movies that followed the original don't match the scores used for the original.

i've honestly got to give hans zimmer a pat on the back because i really like the soundtracks for the movies he composes. inception's music was really very good and dramatic and i think some of the compositions fit the situations of a dream and reality. he also did prince of egypt if i do recall and i really liked that soundtrack as well.

also alan menken is just so iconic to me since he composes so many pieces for walt disney animation studios.

if i were to go the route of video games, especially jrpgs since they are so heavily based on story i would say yoko shimomura and nobuo uematsu for obvious reasons and their works in games such as kingdom hearts and final fantasy. as for more western rpgs, shooters, etc. i liked andrew and simon hale's work in l.a. noire for their 1940's esque music which i absolutely loved as well as normand corbeil for heavy rain which i thought was an emotional game with music that fit.

also i second the fuk?'s book of eli reference, it was a really good soundtrack.

The two that come right to mind are the Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain (Yann Tiersen) and Pocahontas (Alan Menken) soundtracks.

I love the continuity in both; they feel like a soundtrack, not just individual songs. They have similar melodies and instruments used throughout that makes it so cohesive, and each capture the movie beautifully.

Daft Punk's soundtrack for Tron: Legacy was really awesome too. c:

The Ocean's 13 Trilogy is known for oozing style, and I think David Holmes' tracks did a great deal of contributing to this. Every track off that soundtrack puts off this sexy, funky groove that really gets you into the 1930 Jazz vibe you get off the main characters of the film.

    This too. C:

And now that I think of it, Pan's Labyrinth had a brilliant soundtrack, composed by Javiar Navarette. I especially love the lullaby. <3

Oh, and duh, I can't believe I forgot the Lord of the Rings.

Loved this so much! And I also loved Tron Legacy: Reconfigured which had remixes of all of the songs on the original soundtrack by Daft Punk. They really picked the perfect duo to make that score because honestly I don't know if anyone could have made it better. Their cameo was pretty nice too at the End of Line club.

I love the Avenue Q soundtrack (it's a broadway show) because the music is hilarious and very enjoyable to listen to.

I also absolutely adore the soundtrack by Daft Punk of Tron Legacy- the music can give me goosebumps. I enjoy their music and I think it fits in well to the film, I don't usually like music on it's own with no lyrics but for this I make an exception.

The soundtrack was about the only thing about that movie that I could really get into when I watched it. It was mostly because it was like 1 AM on a coach bus when (& where) I did watch it. The lullaby is probably the most intruiging track from that one; my drum corps actually performed that as part of our show last summer. It made for a good brassline feature.

As for VG soundtracks, I've always enjoyed KH music, though I think a lot of the KH2 peices got to a point where they sounded a bit too similar. Final Fantasy soundtracks have been cool, for the most part, though I've really only listened to FFX's music to any extensive lengths. The music from Advent Rising (an XBox game) composed by Tommy Tallarico was pretty kicking, in my opinion a cooler soundtrack than KH. But if I had to pick out the game track that truly withstood my test of time, it's the music of the Zelda franchise, particularly Ocarina of Time. Five or six years after my last playthrough of the game, and it's music is still pretty much engrained in my head (I even make it a point to play the Song of Storms myself when I think it's about to rain).
