I would go with Sora 100%. Riku is also a really awesome character, but Sora is actually a role model to me. Ever since I first saw him, I always wanted his hair :D but later as I grew up with the series, Sora seemed to have a great personality. Sora actually changed me as a person. As Sora helped he people that he needed to help, it taught me that I myself could also help random people, even if it is something really simple (Holding the door open for them, picking up something they dropped.) Overall, I think Sora is that light-hearted character that many of us need.

Between the two: Sora. Yeah, riku is epic and all that, but Sora was the original. He previously was the main character and I feel like square lost sight of that. I mean, he is one of my favorites but even I can't deny he becomes pretty stupid in later games. They have begun to treat him like he doesn't even have any common sense; something I think he displayed quite clearly in the first game. True, he didn't know what was going on half the time in said game, but that is specifically because he was just starting out. I really hope he is given proper story development in 3. I know that is kinda the point of the story, but games have dissapointed before.

On the riku side of things, I feel like they just started making a big deal out of him cause he was popular. Which is to say: To make money.

This is all opinion of course, but it is why I choose Sora as my favorite.

Although yes it's pretty obvious Sora has become a bit of a knucklehead, I always thought that his stupidity was more of a way of showing just how innocent of a character Sora really is. In this translated version of KH 3ds novel(Currently still in the works), the way Sora sounds through his own eyes would tell most people that Sora is just very innocent and naive.

P.S: I vote Sora. Riku is cool and all and I do believe he did deserve the mark of mastery, but Sora is...well...Sora. :)

Replaying Kingdom Hearts, I've found myself to have an outward personality more like Sora's, as in the social and randomly nice guy, but in a more introspective sense I'm a lot like Riku, and I think that can be said for most people. That being said, I chose Riku. Sora's more realistic when it comes to how people are towards other people, but when it comes down to who we are fundamentally I think Riku is a more human character due to his constant struggle with darkness. Although that may seem redundant, I think its redundancy is something people can relate to more. There's always going to be a constant struggle with one's demons and I think Riku's character conveys that idea perfectly.
This is why I think Sora and Riku being the two main characters make sense and is a great move on Nomura's part when it comes to human story-telling because they're foils for each other. You can't have Sora without Riku, as in, you can't live life fully without being social (on some degree at least) by having true friends, like Sora, but also you need to reflect on who you are and in doing so face your demons and overcome them, like Riku. I think this is a great idea to convey subconsciously, like Kingdom Hearts does, to a young audience, me in particular as I started playing Kingdom Hearts as a young kid and always felt more of an attraction to Riku because I could see why he did the things that he did. In my opinion, people's reasoning for liking one character over the other is due to what each of the characters mean to the story and their basic character traits, when in reality one should examine the humanity of both of the characters and what elements they represent.
That being said, I think Riku is a better character due to the fact that he's more human in the sense that he's not consistently happy like Sora is. While Riku's depression may get annoying at times to some people (never did to me, though), Sora's consistent happiness just doesn't feel real. But then again, that's why it's so powerful when Sora is upset. Plus I see Riku as more of an Itachi and Loki character in the sense that he contributes to the overall story line a great deal but does so in a way that's undercover, unlike Sora or Naruto/Sasuke or Thor who drive the story outwardly since they're the main characters, and because of that I find that it's more difficult to write Riku's character in such a successful way that Nomura has done.

Aaah I don't know.. don't make me choose.
I love both of them and their personalities are so different compared to each other that I just can't choose.
Riku is more mature, what I like about him a lot. But in Sora's case, everyone's connected to him and he always cheers me up.
I go for both of them.

Riku. I honestly hate Sora and Riku shows a lot of development/intelligence. I could also relate to Riku a lot throughout the series because I've always had that one thing I've constantly struggled with and my life, as well as everything I did, seemed to revolve around it.. Aside from that, I despise Sora because he's so naive and ignorant sometimes.

Um, I believe Sora is better because 3 out of 5 games where Riku and Sora are in Sora saved Riku, the 2 other games are Chain of memories and Dream Drop Distance.

Riku no doubt, He's always been my favourite even from kingdom hearts because he doesn't choose between light and dark he has both. and because of his maturity level being right for his character who does have to support a bit of a child as a main protag. it's a balance I've always loved within riku and the kingdom hearts series itself.

Um, Sora cuts through multiple buildings at once, RIku has only been shown cutting through one.

The fact that they CAN cut through a building seems pretty amazing to me.

Sora and Riku are just two amazing characters, so competition seems tough.
