Okay so in each KH game where Sora is a playable character he has to re-learn a crap load of magic skills he has already learned before. My question is shouldn't he have some sort of subconscious/instinctive ability to remember at least one of his magic abilities? I mean KH3 will be the 5th time Sora has to learn his magic abilities all over again. ( I assume we have to re-learn them based on the trend.)

    KH1: Start of the journey
CoM: Loses memories from previous game.
KH2: Lost memories from CoM but not from KH1/Slept for a whole year.
KH3D:"You are going to have to start fresh for the exam."
KH3:? (Maybe the condition Sora had with Ventus's Armor will restart his levels?)

I know just about all of these are legitimate reasons for why he has to re-learn his magical skills but come on! The dude has like four other keyblade wielders (Ventus, Vanitas, Roxas, Xion) in him who are pretty capable of using magic. Roxas gave Sora his memories so that had to include some sort of magic casting/training within it. Plus in some games Sora starts off with Guard or Dodge Roll. Are magical abilities that hard to learn/re-learn or are there some special cases to them or something?

Gameplay/story segregation, mostly. It's just a gameplay thing. It had nothing to do with the story.

In kh2, Merlin directly states that Sora lost practice while asleep. That's basically it.

It's a gameplay thing. It'd wouldn't be as fun, or would be weird for new players if the game started with Sora knowing a lot of abilities, and magic. In KHIII, I have no idea how they'll try to add that into the story, the Ventus armor, or Riku unlocking Sora's heart might be a possible reason.

No I know it would be weird if he knew all of his previous abilities and it would take the fun out of the game. I'm just saying can't he start off with basic magic abilities since this will be his 5th time re-learning them? After all he sometimes remember both Guard and Dodge Roll.
Besides don't you find it weird/unnatural that Sora can't remember them despite his advantages he has in just knowing the basics by heart?

He's not relearning them at this point, he knows how to do magic, but can only use it when he puts a card in his command deck or something
It's worth noting that Sora's magic skills have evolved through the games, so it's not like he learns from scratch or anything

That still doesn't explain why he doesn't start off with the basic abilities.

Well he does. Right at the start he has a few basic cards, and he buys the rest from Moogles

Moves which he should have known in the previous game he was in...
Sigh Sora probably isn't even going to be the first player we play as in KH3. It will be probably be someone else who has a justifiable reason to be at level 1 at the start. Someone like Kairi.

I guess they could pull up yet another Metroid, but hopefully they won' t. Judging from the trailer each keyblade will have its own special moveset and I' d rather have them switch the progression on that.

For instance we can see Sora shoot a few regular fire spells. Then he morphs his keyblade into dual guns and go all trigger happy, makes the regular fire spell look like a tiny wet firecracker in hindsight.

So I guess they could give you the regular stuff from starters, then overshadow it with evolved moves in the long run. You know, have Sora go all Dante, so to speak. BBS was already like that to a degree. Of course that means the scope of the threats we' ll face has to be upped too, but hey, it' s the grand finale, it' s supposed to end with a bang.

I don't think there are cards in this game, I mean the command menu is off if they were going for that.

Now that's an interesting way to start the game.

I think he should just start with some magic. Not all of it, but at least the basics. Casters need some damned love from this series for once.

In COM I think the fact that Marluxia gathered Sora's memories into cards may have jumbled his memory on how to use his magic and other abilities. At least, that's the excuse I'm going with.
In KH2 it was because he was out of commission for a whole year, so he couldn't keep up with his studies.
In KH3, he may just have to relearn everything because of his training. That, or he might start with some magic. Who knows.

I think they will play it off as he learned them in the Dream Worlds in 3D, and must learn them in the actual worlds in KH3. It is just a gameplay thing that unfortunately finds its way into the story.
