A ton of old threads have been randomly closed without any reason whatsoever; WHY?

It sucks because it means that if people want to bring something back for discussion, they will have to make another thread.. and well, duplicate threads piss me off so much more than bumped threads. It clutters up the forum.

Please give me/point me in the direction of some explanation for this ******ry, thanks.

What sections are they in? If it's KH then it was me, lol. I did it cause no one ever used the search funtion n' i kept the most common discussion threads open.

I think it's in all sections.. I've noticed it in the Media and Anything Else sections the most, though because those are the sections I usually dig around in. But if you looks at your old threads, I'm sure you'll find some where you'll think "ok so whytf was that closed? >8|" I know that's what I think about some of my old threads.

Ah! The anythin' else was closed because some folk were randomly bumpin' really old threads with nothin' to contribute. It began to annoy folk so they were closed, rather than move to spam. I suppose if you really want one open just PM a member of staff.

I've always assumed that all threads have a set time limit before automatically closing. You know, 100 days no one posts and the thread's automatically locked or something...

I use to do that in the KH section, but it was like 3-5 months.

Really? I thought the forum had like an automatic thing so mods and admins didn't have to bother with it themselves...

Me too. Well, what if the thread is like stupid theories that Terra is Zack or crap like that?

Then we just moan that someone made another Terra = Zack thread and hopefully ignore it and let it die.

Or it could be closed n' ask members to use the search feature in the future or merge it. If there's so many of the one thread there could be an official thread for it (kinda lame to have an official Terra = Zack thread, but meh), like the 14th Org member thread.

It's a lot easier to make a new thread than search for the old one.

I've always wondered, when you want to talk about something, is it better to bump an old thread or start a new one?

Cuz it really bugs me when people start a new one without even bothering to search for an old one...

And bumping only annoys me if they only add like one sentence for the post count...

EDIT: Or if it's in the spam zone on an unpopular thread. That bugs me too...

    Yeah... I noticed that too...

Mods, whats the bigger crime? Necro bumping? Or making a duplicate thread?

And how old does a thread have to be before its officially necro bumped?

I actually made a thread that asked the exact same thing:

How many weeks does it take...

Over two months so far and no one's responded yet. :p

I really don't get why there are 'necro' threads any way unless they are going to actually be removed if we aren't supposed to revive them. Maybe some threads if they are too old should automatically be trimmed off so that it helps with the space and all and that way no one opens a too old thread. That way if a new thread comes about later too, people aren't upset about it and threads can be merged easier if a past one does exist still. I think removing old threads after a time duration of no response would fix this up so that there is no such thing again as a dead thread and the search for the threads still semi-current means no one gets it for reopening the topic.

Wait... I thought there was something like that already? I think I've read it somewhere that a thread is supposed to be locked if it hadn't been posted in over a month. O.o' Though I do not see it happening anywhere. <_<
    That should be made automatic.

I don't think old threads should be closed, and especially not deleted/removed, as that would decrease people's post count.. and it's pretty annoying when you want to talk about something and you do the clever thing, search for the thread in case it's already been made, but you find it's closed. In that situation, most people will create a new thread, which bugs me a lot. It means that posts in the previous thread won't be read. I sometimes find myself having to repeat what I've already wrote.

It's way better to merge duplicate threads instead of closing one and leaving the other open, that way everyone's post is read.

I personally aim to merge threads as it is anyway, for the reason that repeat topics piss me off, I do lock threads that are in the spam zone that are necro bumped, because lol it is the spam zone and I fail to see why anyone wants to revive a thread from 4 months ago regarding spinach.

Threads in places like Intelligent Discussion are generally kept open for that exact reason, because new ideas come out and new theories, although Current Events threads are locked (since there is only so long that something is classed as current afterall xD)

Familes and RPs are locked and deleted after a month with no posts, though people do have the option of reposting if they really want and they have asked a mod prior to the remake.

Locked threads in creativity can be unlocked at the request of the thread starter, I have unlocked several when people have wanted to update their stories etc.

As for Anything Else, those were locked I believe because of the post whoring when people were bumping really old pointless threads. I have no idea why the media section threads were locked. Though it isn't really something to complain about as it isn't exactly difficult to either a) PM a mod to unlock it, or b) make a new thread linking to the locked one.
