Nobuo Uematsu will probably be remembered among the "greats" of music. You know, people like Beethoven, Mozart, and all those old dudes. For those of you who don't know, Nobuo Uematsu is music composer behind the majority of the Final Fantasy games and, in fact, announced at his 2012 Distant Worlds concert in Columbus, Ohio that he will be in charge of the music for Final Fantasy XV.

At a panel he did at a con after that concert in 2012, I met Nobuo Uematsu, got his autograph, and shook his hand. I have shaken the hand of someone who may very well be remembered for centuries after his death.

    I think that's pretty amazing.

He's an arright composer. Mitsuda blows him out of the water though when it comes to Square music.

    >implying video game music isn't niche

quality of music aside, it's not popular. and while popularity doesn't dictate longevity, he's not part of a scene that's wider than a certain spectrum of fans. his music is only really popular with people who play video games AND enjoy listening to game OSTs. very rarely are you going to have someone who doesn't play, sit down and enjoy an OST. and not all gamers are going to sit down and enjoy the music outside of the game. i appreciate music in a game, but i hate listening to it out of context. he won't be remembered for centuries because it's niche music.

    >The series has been commercially and critically successful; it is Square Enix's best selling video game franchise, with more than 100 million units sold

Pretending Uematsu's music is niche and that US GAMERS type people haven't made his music viral over YouTube videos and Facebook is like being a hipster who lies to himself about what's popular

I remember going to a Q&A panel for Nobuo Uematsu and apparently he wanted to be a Mexican wrestler before he wanted to compose music.

first point, that's 100 million copies of the game. we're talking about the music here. that's also 100 million copies of an entire franchise.
square's most popular game, final fantasty vii, only sold 10 million copies. every other game in the series has sold less than that. the number of people listening to the music is going to be less than the number of people who bought the game. let's look at the highest selling music artists, the beatles.

    • US: 207.6 million
    • JPN: 4.950 million
    • GER: 8 million
    • UK: 12.045 million
    • FRA: 3.890 million
    • AUS: 2.780 million
    • CAN: 14.425 million
    • ITA: 230,000
    • BRA: 550,000
    • SWE: 485,000
    • SPA: 1.240 million
    • AUT: 500,000
    • SWI: 350,000
    • BEL: 265,000
    • DEN: 220,000
    • POL: 175,000
    • ARG: 1.570 million
    • NZ: 540,000

Those are sales of just their music, whereas you're talking about the sales of the games.

second point, the music may be viral, but it's only viral in the gaming community. you're a part of that, you follow a lot of that, that's what's gonna jump on your feed. don't mistake popularity within a group to be widespread beyond that group.

Nah, Otakon 2011 lol. There was also a Final Fantasy Distant Worlds Concert in the area that he was a part of, but it was at the same darn time as the con and well, didn't wanna spend an extra $70 for a ticket. :c

That's exactly what happened with me too! Was there a girl who asked him to sign her wedding photo? I wanna see how far the similarities go.

why can't i hold all these assumptions

Also, something to disprove you real quick is that a lot of final fantasy music has millions of views on YouTube. I found two videos that had over two million, and even one of all the boss themes with 1.4 million. Hell a music video set to one of the themes had over THREE MILLION views. Music sales declining due to the internet age? DO GO ON.

In the case of determining how popular something is, it can be. Under the current view counting system, a Youtube video with 3,000,000 views is extremely popular no matter how you slice it. In the case of a video that consists only of a song and a picture, the video's popularity is probably a decent indicator of how popular the song is.

Obviously this doesn't hold up in every case or even most of them, but here I feel it has some validity.
