I have to produce a project on the way certain groups within society are represented through a variety of mediums. What i need are some suggestions of groups that could make an interestin' project topic. I was thinkin' Elderly people in the media (since no one else choose that as a topic), but i think it's a wee bit dull. Suggestions, please.
Youth. The BBC had an article recently about how the youth of the UK are unfairly demonised. How the media portrays all of us as little shits who would like nothing more than to stab you just because you looked a bit funny at them. It had quite a lot of statistics and maybe links to the original research =]
A lot of folk are writin' 'bout teenagers in the UK. Perhaps if i change it from "Teenagers" to "Youth" it might seem more original. ;P No no, Youth is a great topic. It has a lot sources in the media to choose from. The top choices seem to be, Gays, Women, n' Teenagers.
Women, to be honest, would be boring. Already long covered with the whole Suffragettes. You need something that is fresh and present. The youth thing is good, and as you said there is plenty out there about it. Gays...there isn't actually that much, I don't think, of the kind of stuff you are looking for. The media doesn't really tend to portray them as anything. People watch things on the news about them and then form their own opinions.
Maybe try a stereotype or maybe do midde aged people since they seem to usually d something interesting (mid life crisis XD) or if not do what Bunterx said and pick Youth as in the media (mostly BBC) they make a massive fuss about Youth and Elderly stuff.
It's not just articles we've to look into but tv soaps, sitcoms, magazines, adverts n' such. So, we've to look into how those types of characters are put across to the audience, whether they are similar to other representations of the same group or if there are any that contrast the general out-look of that group. Does that make sense? xD
yeah, so try a stereotype like a vamp (basically meaning **** if ya didn't know) or other types of personality and character (vamp is the only one I remember, sorry)
I dunno what a vamp is. o__o I had considered Emos but i dunno. Folk always associate 'em with the ristin' cuttin' n' the poetry readin'. lol
A vamp is a person who does "it" with lots of people, like Tracy Barlow was on Corrination street XD anywho, Emo's would be quite a good topic as not may people understand what being an emo is (half the emo's nowadays don't even act like the emos I knew). Btw the wrist cuttin' stuff be a lie, only teh wannabees do that. I saw this video about teenagers views on emos, if ya interested in me sending ya link.
Ohhhh! Gotcha. xD I didn't say emo's did cut their wrists but folk that i have spoken to usually bring that up - be it a joke or not. I would very much appreciate seein' that video. ^^
You could try to find a minor religion or ethnic group that is misrepresented in today's society through stereotypes in the media.
