Go into a room with no windows. If you can't, the safest place for you to be is in a car -- rubber tires. I like to bring several pillows with me in order to surround my head so I can't hear the thunder. Ear plugs work too.

Edit: lol, but good luck with tornadoes. I thought it said thunderstorm.
