Secularity was perfectly enforced in the schools I' ve been to and I' ve never heard any religious person complain about it. Times are changing though, it seems some Muslims are beginning to try and push their religion into French public schools. BTW, in both our countries secularity was inscribed in the laws by religious people, because they saw what happens when the state and the church do sleep in the same bed and it' s not a pretty sight. The issue isn' t as bull****** as you make it sound, and protesting as soon as a religion asks for a finger is the best way to not have them ask for an arm later.

I doubt anyone is truly offended by prayer. I'm not offended when I hear a Jewish, Muslim or w/e prayer. Hell, I'm not offended when I hear Atheists making fun of Christians, because it's not something worth getting offended over. I don't care if people don't like my beliefs. The problem I have is with people not respecting others beliefs. You could argue that public prayer could be taken as disrespecting the beliefs or people that aren't Christian, but I think it would be a stretch to argue that, as the intent to disrespect is not there at all, and the non-Christians are not being forced to pray. However, that doesn't change what I said earlier about a moment of silence being more appropriate. It's more about understanding that not everyone there is a Christian, and because of that having a ritualistic moment that people can use however they please, not about having a moment of silence because prayer isn't part of your belief system.

I'm not sure what they motivation behind signing this petition is, but if it's about doing away with public prayer because you want to take away all religious aspects of any public activity, I wouldn't agree with it. (for the reasons you said.) But if it was about doing away with public prayer because people of other religions are there as well and one religion shouldn't be favored over the other, I would agree with it.

Why can't we all agree to just insult Scientology?

That's the main point here. Freedom of religion for everyone was the reason why this country was eventually started (and by everyone, I mean everyone who is a white male from England), which means not having a public prayer, where the leader of a government run place prays to a god that quite a few people don't believe in. I wouldn't go to start a movement to get rid of it because I have better shit to do with my time, but I support whoever does decide to join in on it.

This. We hold a prayer in the stadium, before every game (which is a big deal because we are a football-oriented school and community), they ask for silence, and then a different school official leads in a Christian prayer every game. One of our other campuses recently just got done with court about it and had to remove it. It honestly took like....a day for the court to say "you can't do it. It's illegal. Either represent all religions or none. You, as a public school, cannot endorse one religion over the other."

Wow, way to be an assh*le and do EXACTLY what most atheists hate about vocal religions: Shove your views down their throat.

If someone is having a spiritual experience by talking to some old guy with a magic wand because it comforts them about losing their mother to cancer or their brother to war, then I will let them have that damn talk.

How is getting rid of a public prayer shoving his religious views down their throat?

See, you're assuming that prayer time is something that EVERYONE hates. Because atheists tend to think because they're atheist, that everyone is and should be and they will be blinded by your opinions.

Some people enjoy the spiritual time and staying connected with their god(s?). Some people enjoy the time to think about their fallen loved ones. Prayers have existed at games for a long time. Even in professional sports, there'll every now and then be a time set aside for a public prayer.

(I'm agnostic btw, so let's skip over that whole "Oh pffffft you're religious what do you know" crap).

The title of the thread set up disaster, I already knew it.

In any case, I don't even know why you would want to institute a public player at a public football game. Well, whatever. More power to you, and please, don't get lynched. •n•

Because he's a super atheist and the very mention of religion rustles his jimmies?

Meaning he had conflicts with it before and chose to all out reject? Probably overly religious parents or a religious school.

Oh, wait. I must be misunderstanding ; does he want to remove the public prayer, or institute it?

I'm religious and I'd probably be a part of said movement if I could. Then again, I don't believe prayers do anything anyways.

    Remove.

I was wondering why you said institute.... I just didn't bother correcting you.[DOUBLEPOST=1347597075][/DOUBLEPOST]
    Of course not. Physically impossible.

Doesn't mean you need to remove a person's spiritual time from their day.
