The series really hasn't changed for the better. Even three doesn't have a lot of new to add to the gameplay (so far at least). Assassin's Creed hit it's peak with II and it's been downhill ever since. The story has been getting worse and worse. If your friend means Assassin's Creed 1, than yes, it was a boring game after the 2nd hour.

Even though I play Assasssin's Creed I can see what your friend is saying.
First! The horrible gameplay! It's getting better true, but it's still a bit crappy.. I know you're an Assassin so Killing "silently" should be easier than an 1X1 fight.. So I don't bother when I sometimes fail to make a Stealth Kill, and end up in a dull fight (the moves aren't as fluids as other action games like PoP, GoW, Batman, etc). But in many time THE OWN game makes you fight 30X people that are healping an Boss what is just a pain in the ass ;(.. that is a bit sad as the fight in itself isn't difficult, only boring and long.. so they're just making you waste time.
(The new games gave you a way to counter these times with your assassin's helpers that will handle most crowds)

Second thing that sucks! The game has an terrible storytalling in one sense.. it moves like an Soap Opera! You play 20h of game with barely no new story (sure there is the historical story, but not the main) and than in the 10 final minutes the hole plot is given in one giant clifhanger... only for you to wait another game that will come out in 6 months!

Third! It's due to the previous fault... TOOO MANY GAMES ALL THE TIME! They are launching AC's games non-stoping! Sometimes they launch two in a row! What makes it difficult to keep up with! We have other games to play and some players just don't have that much money to spend! Whithout mentioning the Psp exclusives ... many of these games could be sumirazed in one or two as the "main plot" only got like 10 minutes of footoge, so they could do it 20 in one game and not 10 in two..

I meanly play it because I got a friend who is a fan, so I can borrow the games, but I am not sure I would spend my money on it, even though is fun.

I agree, Assassins Creed is far from my favorite series, but far from my least favorite. Its very 'meh' to me.In my opinion the main thing that really irritated me was how they put the Full Sync thing in to cheapen up the difficulty.

To each his own I suppose. Though "Japanese actionie" isn't the word I'd use to discribe Assassin's Creed. Nothing to do with the fact that it is made by a French company.

I'll probably play it at some point. I've play AC1, AC2, AC: Brotherhood so I might as well play AC3 to at least get a conclusion.

Assassin's Creed blends solid gameplay (at least, after the first game...took so long to actually assassinate people in that one) with an intriguing story (usually) in vivid historically important settings (THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR WHY DON'T MORE GAMES DO THIS) letting us step into the shoes of interesting characters (Ezio is a playaaaaaaa but can also be srs buzniz) and making us interact with a living, breathing world (towns are full of chatter and activity). Much as I'm not a fanboy of the series, I can tell why so many people love it, though I personally have only gotten to play the first 2.

Skylanders is some beat-em-up with action figures I think. And lol it having a good story.

the problem with the revolutionary war is that most gamers from outside US find it to be a "flag game" a game all about the american values , saviours of the world, manifested destiny , etc... and this expecific themetic is really boring, and overused , if not in games in movies and books, and comics everywhere...
So It is a dangerous thing to bet on, and mostly all previous AC showed that all governs are corrupted, as they try to control people (the figure of the templars) and how power corrupts man. But you don't really expect that the game portrait the fathers of nation (US) as evil characters do you? Americans probably would reject this, but so far all the places in AC are like this, so is like "chaging the game to fit in the fans likes".
Even though they'll lauch a DLC that george washinthon goes bad and try to become the new King, it wont be cannon.

"Oh, that's fine, I'm not really a fan of skylanders, it's fairly childish and a waste of money with all the extra stuff you have to buy"

    How dare opinions exist.
