Most books are pretty awful. Like any other form of media, you're going to get some good ones but the only thing that the book has over anything else is that you've got nearly two thousand years worth of prefiltered content to choose from. If you're reading new books you're stacking the odds against yourself being able to enjoy any of it.

The truth of the matter is.
Most people just find books boring.
Books tend to leave things to the imagination and thus don't have the necessary stimuli that most people these days.
Even now when you're reading paragraph after paragraph after paragraph of info on the internet.
You still have the stimuli of...
    - A bright screen
    - A mouse to move around
    - Words to highlight
    - Interactivity with the writer(typer) sometimes

Not saying books are inherently BAD which they aren't. But there's a very clear reason why people use them for campfire these days. It's also the reason why e-readers are popular

I always find this amusing because many of the die-hard readers I know (except a few) swear on physical hard copies. I do agree to some extent; there is something intrinsically pleasant about flipping the pages and getting your way through, but in the end of the day preferences are all very personal. That being said, I find e-reading much more convenient and its displacement of physical books in the future, at least for the mass market, almost seems inevitable. and because of this it may well enough be easier for a bookless interneteer to focus on e-books instead.
