I had no idea about what this was, and I opened it up and it was from The National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and apparently because of my grades so far in UH, I am eligible to sign up for them, which can give me the chance to get scholarships, career opportunities, and a few others things.

The one thing I'm wondering about is the $95 joining fee. Why send an email saying you can join this group, and oh yeah, it costs one hundred dollars? I know it's a great chance to help with my schooling, but come on, I don't exactly have that kind of money lying around. I know I should just do it, but I'm going to hold off to see what my parents say exactly

Google it, and select the News tab. See what comes up. That helped me figure out my last university is getting sued for fraud.

So when you see absolutely no news on it except one article which gives no info on it from back in July 2015, what do you do? Well, considering I wasn't entirely sure about it to begin with, even my parents are like "Yeah, it's not 'real'", and I can't find much info on it outside of its own website and knowing it's a member on ACHS, I'm just going to pass it by. It sounds like a good opportunity, but there's nothing holding it up. Unfortunate too

If you can find absolutely nothing, then I would give it up. Most scholarships have at least an announcement page where they showcase the students who have won for the semester, or the year. You could always ask your financial aid office if you really want to put effort in, they should keep tabs on scholarships that are inside and outside of the school.

Well, there is a scholarship I still need to sign up for that one of the heads of the DIGM department sent in a newsletter email, so maybe I can still get a little money.

If there is no information about what they're doing with your membership fee, or such information indicates that very little of it is being used for their students' benefit (i.e. mainly going into operating costs or what-have-you), then right off the bat any organization asking for your money is a bit suspect imo.

Joining up also doesn't guarantee you'll receive any scholarships or resources. You may be looking at a payment with zero return.

NSCS invites any freshman or sophomore student with a 3.4 GPA or above. If you continue to meet this criteria and do not accept, they will continue to contact you, and you will probably receive nominations from other organizations as well. So if you change your mind later, it's no big deal.

I registered for it back when I was a freshman several odd years ago I attending meetings for a year, and they did a lot of great stuff. They had a special booth out every week, they volunteered at community events and hospitals. Granted, NMSU's chapter is like in the top 5 of the programs. I feel it really depends on what the chapter has to offer you there.

Plus, there's all that good networking.
