Posting this in the music section since I have to rant about something... First of all, Dream Theater was f-ing amazing. Every song they played was incredible, I would definitely pay to see them again. Now after seeing that performance, it was like "Man that was awesome, now lets see Iron Maiden deliver even more bad-azz tunes" (most of which are from the early to mid 80's). Iron Maiden comes out and announces that they have a new album coming out sometime this August, and played about 4 tunes from that album. Everyone in the crowd just practically looked at each other and was like "Eh? What is this crap." (seriously, their new album is awful). About 5 songs in people started chanting "play some old shi-" because the stuff they were playing was just... bad. I don't know how else to describe it. Bruce Dickinson eventually caught onto the chant and started feeding the fans a speech on how "People just want to hear the old shi- and none of their newer stuff, and how that the new album coming out was 3rd in presales and blahblahblah... whatever". Eventually they went on the play "Number of the Beast" and "Hallowed be Thy Name", but right after that they went right back into their newer stuff again. After examining the crowd, I could feel that they felt the same way about their newer music. 90% of the people there didn't even know the songs being played, let alone actually enjoyed listening to them. The fact that they went on to play this stuff and not playing a single track from "Somewhere In Time" or "Powerslave" just really disappointed both me and the entire crowd tonight. Point being, I don't think I will ever see Iron Maiden in concert again. I understand that they are really excited about this new album and want to play stuff from it, but it was clear the people there wanted to hear the tracks from their golden days... and simply enough, they did not deliver. So uh... yeah. Discussion on the Final Frontier tour (with Dream Theater) and Iron Maiden's new album.
I saw them on Monday and they only played one song from their new album. Dream Theater was indeed completely amazing. I was pretty pissed when they didn't play anything from Piece of Mind or Powerslave, but they did play a great of other great songs. When I saw them they ended with Number of the Beast, Hallowed Be Thy Name and Running Free. Overall, I would see them again, just not a tour for a new album I think.
WAAAAAAH!!! THET'RE PLAYING SONGS FROM THE ALBUM THEY'RE TOURING FOR WAAAAAH!!!! See how ridiculous you're sounding? **** I hate a lot of fellow metal fans. Especially considering, from the sounds of things, you're one of those Maiden fans that thinks everything from the Blaze era on sucks.
They're* You missed the point I was trying to make. Their fanbase attends their concerts to hear at the very least, a mixture of their golden age music and their newer stuff. To play their entire new album, which is definitely their worst album so far, is just going to kill their fanbase. So many people were leaving yesterday disappointed, not hard to see why. Maybe if their new album was actually decent, it wouldn't have been as bad. Maiden should just really give up on making new music. And you think they are great? How the hell can you attend an Iron Maiden concert where they don't play even one song from Powerslave, Piece of Mind, or Somewhere In Time? I understand they are touring for their new album but they shouldn't ignore their fanbase for what they want to hear.
Obvious typo is obvious. First I have to wonder if you've heard any of their more recent albums. I seriously doubt that the only modern era material they played was from their new album. If you haven't heard their newer albums, how are you so sure that all the songs were from said new album? Next, I need to know the setting of the concert. If it was a music festival, they would have a shorter set, so they'd have to rearrange things. Of course, if it wasn't a festival set, then disregard that last bit. Yes. Yes I do. I enjoy almost all of Maiden's albums to some extent (Killers and Iron Maiden are the only ones I don't like at all). In fact, The X Factor is among my favorites of theirs right next to Number of the Beast and Powerslave. Sure, comparatively, Virtual XI, Dance of Death and A Matter of Life and Death are weak when put against something like Powerslave, but they're still good, if not great, albums on their own. When I went to see Judas Priest, I didn't hear anything from Angel of Retribution, Painkiller (favorite album of Priest's) and only "You Got Another Thing Coming" from Screaming for Vengeance. I think I'd be able to live with Maiden not playing from Powerslave. And the person posting after you stating that they only played one song from their new album makes me wonder if they really didn't play anything from their classic era.
I'll say this, I went into that concert only knowing 1 or 2 Dream Theater songs. Every song they played I could really get into and liked them a lot. I'll admit I didn't know a lot of Iron Maiden's newer stuff, and as I mentioned earlier, if it was actually good I wouldn't have minded as much. The older songs they did play were the ones Lone mentioned; Number of the Beast and Hallowed be Thy name. Then they went on to play something off "The X Factor" where Dickinson wasn't even the singer for that album. It wasn't a festival, and I knew it was from their new album since I looked them up afterward. Maybe that's just my opinion, but Iron Maiden's ignoring all the music that made them great is just a slap in the face to the fans. But hey, if they want to tour that way then they can do what they want, I just won't attend anymore.
We had gone to different concerts. They only played one song from their new album at the concert I went to, because it was the only song they had released at the time. The day after they had released one or two more songs on their website. That's why they didn't play more from Final Frontier.
Except that it IS good music. Or at least the stuff between The X Factor and A Matter of Life and Death. I'll reserve judgment on The Final Frontier until I've actually heard it. That's actually kind of surprising considering that most fans like to try and pretend that the Blaze era never happened and Maiden was simply on a few year long hiatus instead for some bizarre reason. If you were to mention a few song titles, maybe I'd be more inclined to believe you. Again, they're touring for The Final Frontier, you should have expected them to focus on The Final Frontier. They aren't going to change a set list in the middle of a show. These things are planned out weeks in advance. However, I will give you that with the prominence of the internet, sets don't have to focus almost entirely on what they're promoting. Perhaps they're slightly behind on the times. So, you're going to completely disregard thirty years of them showing off just how well they can play live simply because of one bad experience? If you feel they focused on the album too much, wait until they're promoting a live album or compilation album, or just touring for the sake of touring. They've only released two songs from the new album, so if that's the case, I seriously doubt they'd play more than those two plus maybe a couple more. Of course, a lot of old bands like that have to deal with fans that refuse to support anything from their supposed "glory days." Case in point, there was a noticeably weaker reaction to Judas Priest playing "Prophesy," a song from Nostradamus, when I saw them last year, and a noticeably weaker, but not as weak as the reaction to Priest playing "Prophesy," reaction to Rush playing songs from Snakes and Arrows (except "Far Cry" and "Malignant Narcissism" for some reason) when I saw them live in 08.
Well hey, maybe I didn't do my homework on the setlist last night... and I'll admit that was my fault. I hate the people who claim that if you don't love every single song Maiden does, it must not make you a REAL fan. I can still be an Iron Maiden fan and hate most of their newer stuff. Some of their stuff "in the the last 20 years" was good though, especially Dance of Death and the ones from Brave New World, but honestly... you have replace at least 2 or 3 of the rest with some stuff like Powerslave, the Trooper, Wasted Years. ....they did NOTHING from Somewhere in Time or Seventh Son, which is an insult to me as a Maiden fan. Also Dickinson was buried in the mix, and the guitars were nearly inaudible at times. Just my opinion anyways.
OK, fine, but it should common sense that they'd be playing something from the album they're touring for. Never said that. The idea of "fans vs REAL fans" is one of the stupidest and most immature ideas ever conceived. "Most" isn't just A Matter of Life and Death and the Blaze era, but, hey, if that's you opinion. Again, the set lists are chosen weeks in advance, so there's really nothing that could have been done there. Oh, I know irritating that can get. A bad mix can completely ruin a show. Still, I gotta play devil's advocate here and say that Maiden tends to put on good shows, a bad night is simply a bad night. Note that I'm playing devil's advocate and wouldn't be if it weren't for Maiden's positive live reputation.
Iron Maiden was good? Lol. Trolling aside, I really never liked Iron Maiden much. Especially after hearing Aces High. I honestly thought I had accidentally played Run to the Hills at first. Meh. Iron Maiden's lead singer stands out but he sounds the same in just about every song. I just never found enough variety in Iron Maiden and their sound was dull to me. To be honest, I only like The Trooper after having listened through 40 or so of their songs. If people who like their old stuff more than their new stuff think the new album will suck...well, maybe I'll check it out to see if I like it. Personally, I'd prefer Led over Maiden any day. As for Dream Theater...eh. I don't have anything to say about them. Which isn't a bad thing.
Newfag reporting :B I'm listening to The Final Frontier now and I like it. I mean, I'm not in love, but I could rock out to it at a party. I dislike their older stuff, because I just think it hasn't aged well. That and the number of the beast is 616, not 666. (Although it would be more hilarious than satisfying if they changed it in their live performances.) And y'know, it infuriates a lot of bands when the crowd calls for their older stuff. Kinda like how it pisses me off when people make Sprothe jokes at me, like that's my signature. It makes them feel like they can't do anything anymore without being lost in the shadow of their elder work. There's a difference between honoring one's history and putting it up on a freaking pedestal, obscuring the view of the new history; maybe Iron Maiden is just trying to look to the future. I can understand the need to mix it up a bit, but I mean... they have a new album. That's something to be excited about. And, possibly, to be a bit overzealous about promoting. That's my two cents, anyway. I won't duke it out with anyone over 'em; my preference for metal is something more like Luca Turilli and Therion, or Maximum the Hormone. @Dream Theater: <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
Ah, leaks, the lifeblood of torrenting. Really, while many bands won't make it much of a secret of their lack of caring about people downloading their albums (they're generally more interested in concert tickets as (horribly overpriced) album sales on major labels give very little to the artist while the record executives just rake in the money), they usually want the fans to wait until release date. Still, nice to know that at least one person has a positive opinion on the new album. Side note: Also, saw a copy of the set list and "El Dorado" appears to be the only song from the new album they've played on this tour. Take that as you will.
Easy, big fella. I just found a few tracks on Youtube. That's one of the songs I heard. Maybe they released it early.
Dude, it was easily the best concert I've ever been to. Couldn't agree with you more that Dream Theater was unbelievable. They alone were worth the price of admission, though I wish they had more time on stage. I dunno if they did they at the show you attended, but when they played Panic Attack at the Madison Square Garden gig, Jordan played the solo on a keytar. It was fucking awesome. I'm glad they're as good live as they are on their albums. As for Maiden, they only played El Dorado from The Final Frontier at the show I went to, and El Dorado is pretty sick, so I didn't mind. The played a good deal of classics like Fear of the Dark, Number of the Beast, Hallowed be Thy Name, and Blood Brothers (in memory of Dio; I thought that was nice). However, they didn't play The Trooper, Run to the Hills, or a few other really big hits that I was hoping they would. That being said, their stage presence more than made up for that. I've never seen Maiden live, I've only heard about how awesome they are in person. Good god, were they right. Their singer running all over the place, their guitarists headbanging and spinning around; it was just in general a very fun performance to watch, and you could tell they were really having fun playing. The fact that they're all fifty-something just made it even more awesome. So while Maiden did leave out a few classics, their setlist was still really good and very Maiden. Overall it was an amazing concert. I don't know if any other combination of bands could really top that for me; they complimented each other surprisingly well. It was well worth the $80.00 I payed. Agreed. Seriously, why would you compare Led to Maiden? It's like comparing The Beatles to Slipknot. Except Maiden isn't a bunch of posers.
I've been to gigs where the audience demand they play more older stuff. I saw InMe in Manchester a few years back, one woman in the audience shouted at the band saying "I speak for everyone when I say you need to play more of the older stuff". Well first of all she wasn't and second the band has stated they hate their old stuff. But unfortunately it was that first album when they were at their most popular. It made for a really awkward few minutes seeing this stupid idiot have a go at the band. It ruined the atmosphere. If you see a band on tour to promote an album, you should expect to hear more songs from that album than previous ones. But you shouldn't ignore the obvious fan favourites. I'm quite surprised he ranted to the crowd like that.
