But my dad was in the army. It's cruel that a girl can't have Veterans Day to spend with her Veteran father...

 

I don't really get many holidays off either, we always have school on Columbus and Veteran's Day, as well as Chinese New Year when it falls on weekdays. Though if it does this year I'm saying **** it and not going. >>
And lol, half my family's in some army or another.

My college doesn't recognize national holidays for squat. Like, I think we're the only ones who labor on Labor Day.

I remember in fourth grade when my mom asked me why I had school on Veteran's Day and little 9 year old innocent me cleverly said, "What are you talking about? I doooonnn'ttt?"

First time I ever skipped school.


I don't understand the point to most holidays, tbh, and this is one of them.

 

Who cares? As long as I get a day off I don't question the holiday involved.

 

It's a day to honor the service of veterans and active duty soldiers, considering that they've got their lives on the line for the country on a daily basis I think it's good there's a national "holiday" for them.

I understand that and despite my own views on soldiers, I agree. But that's not what I meant. I meant that most places don't do anything for that. Businesses don't close, for example. At least not since it was changed back to November 11. I mean, my hometown doesn't even have a festival like neighboring towns. It'd be different if veterans got something on this day, more discounts, or a national festival, I don't know. Instead, people just think in the complete different direction and think like

 

Ah, it might vary from town to town then, since my town does have a ceremony that anyone's welcome to attend. The majority of local food places also have a "veterans and active duty soldiers and family" eat free thing, and the family owned and small buisnesses do close for the day.
My school's in a different town though and we apparently have our days off based on the public school's bus system or something, it's weird.
