Sorry if there's another thread similar to this. As everyone knows, Super Smash Bros. Brawl will hit shelves in less than month, and odds are that if you have a Wii, you either plan on getting it or have already preordered. So I just wanted to take a quick poll to see if anyone would be interested in a tournament that I plan to host. If enough people are willing to join, then the Brawl is on! OK, sorry that these details will be vague, but I will make it more clear once I'm actually hosting the tourny. Rules: -You must own a Wii and Brawl with WiFi (took you long enough to figure that out). -It's a stock match, not timed (assuming they will include that feature for online play) -No items (again, assuming this feature will be included). I find items cheap and it really doesn't require any skills to use them. However, if there's an item switch, I'll turn Smash Balls on. -Max # of entrants: 32 - sorry, we can't make this too big. -NO DISCONNECTING! It will be obvious when you did it on purpose, or if you're just a sore loser. If you're winning, odds are that you probably had an errand to do. But if you're losing...it's an automatic disqualification. -There are no prizes for the winners, just bragging rights. Half of the rules probably can't be applied. We'll probably have to add each other as friends to actually access certain features, such as the item switch. But like I said, I just want a general idea of who wants to participate. So yay or nay?
I think I know that, considering that I actually preordered it and check the website everyday. That's why I'm taking a poll now so I'll be ready by the time it's released.
I won't mind joining if it doesn't conflict with Smash League scheduling, however before I say yes I'll need more details on both how it's going to be run and how the rules will work. I'm not entirely satisfied with the d/c issue you stated. It's still possible for someone to disconnect if they're losing, so to disqualify them immediately for a single instance like that isn't entirely justified. No one's played Brawl online yet (from the masses anyway), but I'm hoping you can at least tell what's a legitimate d/c and what's a forced d/c. But if possible, isqualification should occur only for repeated d/cs. That way, even if the player had no intention of disconnecting, it's unfair for players to compete against someone who has an unreliable connection and they should be removed. The person disconnecting should be able to understand this. Essentially, disqualifying someone for disconnecting only one time (even if it so happened to occur @100%+ damage on the last stock) is unfair. Everyone should be allowed the slap of the wrist at least once, which pretty much says "Fix your connection, or you *will* be removed." Lag and disconnects are common place with online gaming; while I do believe in being firm with rules regarding how they're handled, some leeway should be considered as well. It's hard to gauge how to handle them since none of us have first-hand experience with playing Brawl online, eventually more reasonable rules regarding these happenings will reveal themselves. While I agree with having no items on, items are never turned off for the reason of them being 'cheap'. There is skill required in using items (the degree to which they affect the game is relative). For example, being able to accurately throw an item and landing the hit on an enemy who is far off the map is a skill in itself. The reason items are usually turned off in tournaments is because it's important to remove any element of 'randomness' that might jeopardize and interfere with a tournament match. Items are removed to give as much control of the match to the players in it as possible, not because they're 'cheap' and because they 'require no skill'. Both those statements are incorrect. We are also not entirely sure how 'random' items are. Melee had them removed because of explosive crates (that no one could detect) and the occasional bomb-omb and what not. Since it was impossible to turn off explosive crates, all items were consequently removed. In Brawl, it's suggested that not only can we tell which crates are explosive, but we also have the option to turn them off. If this is the case, some items may be able to be left on in tourneys if they can be justified as being neutral and fair to both players. Conclusively, if you turn off items, your reason would simply be preference, nothing more. As for determining the type of match, like you already suggested, I'm pretty sure that adjusting the match settings to make them stock-based matches without time is possible in With Friends mode. The dojo suggests that With Anyone is restricted to 3 minute timed matches with items on and can't be changed. So for sure, you're probably going to have to create a tourney while in With Friends mode. Also, it's up to you if you want to conform to other tourney rules usually found in Melee, but they're usually both stock and timed. (3-5 stock, 5-8minutes). Playing a stock match with a timer can often force players to use a slightly different strategy than playing a stock match without. But it's really up to you. @Saki: Many people have already started trying to set up tournaments for Brawl. We're all aware Brawl hasn't hit shelves yet, but like many others, AznRicyBoy is simply trying to gauge how many are interested. All rulesets for Brawl tournaments at this point, regardless of who's hosting it, probably are aware that none of the rules are set in stone. No one is sure at this point if Smash Balls will be left in or out in tourneys since we haven't fully had a chance to completely understand how they work or weigh out the pros/cons. It's one of the inquiries that lots of people are still wondering about. Only time will tell if Smash Balls will be left on or off. I imagine the first few tourneys in months to come will leave them either on or off, with the reasoning being simply for preference. It might be standardized in the future, but not anytime soon. I'd suggest putting more details together, so you can cover every corner when the issue arises. There are many things to consider when creating a tourney, and since Brawl is a new game, there are lots of untreaded ground that you'll have to address (or try to prepare for since Brawl isn't out yet). Since you said the tourney's simply for fun (not so sure about bragging rights since we'll all be pretty new at the game and pretty inexperienced), I wouldn't mind joining if it doesn't conflict with my Smash League schedule, just I'd like to see more refine in the regulations.
Sorry to say but if you check the website everyday you will realise that the game yet again has been delayed to March 9th, sorry for spreading the bad news
Smash...League...? Never heard of it. But it seems like something that's fairly well-known and that I should be aware of. I'll look into it and see when I can schedule this tourney. Other than that, you pretty much refined all the rules. I'll go with what you say.
I was going to berate you for the items comment, but then I saw Soush already had that covered, so, meh.
