I'm strongly aganist that idea because it is going to spread more diseases and corrupt a lot of people. There is no dignity in that line of work and one should not have to expose their body for income. It sends a horrible message to the younger generations even though prostution has been around since the turn of the century.

Hell no! That is one of the sickest things a desperate person would do. What has become of our way of life? Are we so corrupted to sink that low just to get money? There are other ways to earn an income without endangering ones health and safety. Legalizing it would be a bad idea for it would encourage people to do even more bizarre acts such as legalizing marijuanna and cocaine.

Yeah but making legal would turn it in a business and in actuality decrease the amount of risk and dangers to health. Some people are also desperate enough to do it if it means supporting their family. It's easy to say that there are other ways of getting money without actually providing sound examples. What other occupations did you have in mind that you don't think a prostitute has tried already? And how is drug use and different from other substance use and abuse?

Well it depends on how it is used such as just using it to get high and for the wrong reasons. The same concept applies to prostitution depending on the circumstance of course. For an example if one were to abuse it to be unfaithful to a spouse. So you see it all depends, but personally I feel prostitution is degrading emotionally and will cause regrets that will be with that individual forever.

meh, i wouldnt really mind if it was legalized. I mean well you gotta think about what you're getting yourself into first and all. Also you'd have to take in on how this would effect you mentally and emotionally as well. You would want to go into it and think 'oh god what have i done?' would you?

But if a prostitute doesn't view their services as degrading on an emotional level, that they are just providing another service then how can there be any regret? You could argue that any occupation can be emotionally degrading in the context of how the person views it. What justifies a use as being for the "wrong reasons"? Married men hire prostitutes when it's illegal now.

The main answer seems to be "No wai!!1!1!!! OMG ITS SICK!!1!" (well, perhaps without the rest of it, but still...)

If that is the response you get, step back and consider other jobs. E.g. A pathologist. They work all day surrounded by dead people. Suggest that to anyone now-a-days and you will get the same response. "NO WAI!!!!!!1!!1!! Its just sick!!!!!11!"

But pathology is legal, because it is required. It fills a space in society. Just like prostitution.

How about if I told you you had to stand behind a desk doing nothing for thirteen hours a day just to feed your family? Sounds like that could be detrimental to your health. Wait! it's the job of a cashier.

To be honest, no job is honestly that pleasant.

Office working. Crammed in a 4X4 cubicle for the majority of the day, tapping away at a computer, then getting yelled at by your boss.

As for the health argument, America sends millions of soldiers to Iraq. Given a choice, I think I will go for prostitution. Less chance of getting a bullet through my head.

Yes people should be able to make their own choices but you must keep in mind that those choices won't only hurt them in the end but everyone close to them. Think about the parents. Especially since most people who are prostitutes weren't raised to have that professions. Their parents would be heart broken.

Think about the children who have parents who are prostitutes. They would be scarred for life. Also they would want to be someone better than their parents and they would have to work their butts off to leave thet terrible situation. Also they would see their parents with a different person every night and they'd never know who to call mommy or daddy.

Also when a prostitute wants to get married and they have AIDS or HIV or STD's and if they don't tell their spouse then they get it not knowing what happened.

And that's why prostitution is illegal. Not only because of morals but because of the pain spread to others not only physical but mental.

i'm sure if it were legalized there would be age restrictions for obvious reasons which isn't a bad idea.

even if it were legal, i dont' think i would do it because i dont' think i would be comfortable doing something like that with a stranger.

Those "scars" you talk about are only caused because of the fact that prostitution was made taboo by the Christian church. If attitudes are changed, none of those things would happen.

Also, if it were legalised (as has been said a few hundred times before in this thread >_>) it would be a regulated market and so there would be health checks etc meaning that the risk from STD's and AID's would be greatly reduced.

to all the people who say it should be legalized: what do you think about age restrictions? what age would be the right age for someone to be able to use this service? should there be an age restriction to begin with?

    i just wondering

Well, there should obviously be age restrictions. What is the current restriction on going into full time work in America?

full time, i believe it's 16 years old but you need a work permit (and permission from parents by signing it) i believe, i'm not entirely sure on the fact about parent's permission tho and i'm not sure it's the same everywhere but it's 16 where i live.

The age at which one can give their own consent to have sex would be a likely place to start.

I'd say 18, cause let's face it, not that many 16 kids are responsible.
Unless it was 16 with parental permission, cause we can't give too much free roam. A lot of kids would be unorganized and mess up somewhere.

    lol .

Or it could give the child a great respect for the mother. She is giving up even her own body just to supply the child with food and shelter! Sacrificing so much, just for the sake of her child, that is true love. Not every prostitution ends like Leanne in Coronation Street. If the motives are right, then not only would it not scar the child, it would cause them to look up to their mother with more respect.

Oh, and I am pretty sure the age of consent is eighteen, but it may be twenty one. You know that you don't exactly need to think up these restrictions, right? Prostitution is not a novel concept. American people are as oblivious to the ways of the outside world as we are oblivious to America's was of regulating prostitution.

So my point is, check out some other countries. Over here in NZ, protitution is legal. Nothing bad seems to come from it, and I assume that it is a clean business. Of course, we get our fair share of nutcases. One guy ran over a prostitute multiple times because she refused to do anything without protection. But these cases are just publicized, and it could easily have happened to anyone. If someone is going to kill over sex, chances are they are going to rape, and that affects all countries.

hope not to sound wrong, but in your country how does prostitution work? do you just go to a store and sort of just pay and get one?
