School does really stop any chance of getting to know yourself,s ince you have to be here and there at specific times. I guess thats why many people, when they are older, have the money travel alround the world to 'find themselves'. School should be more free, it holds people's capabilities and creativity back even if it has good intentions at the end of the day.

I agree completely with those statements.

Another bad thing is that school takes up most of your life.

Another bad fact is that after school, working takes up the rest of your life until your retirement check comes into place.

I was home schooled. but I was lucky because my parents didn't drive Christianity into my head.

One of the worst things that most kids go through is the parent forces them to go to a private school and wants them to grow up exactly the way that they want them to. Then take over their business or job at their company.

I know people at my Christian school who are going insane because their getting it drilled into their heads.

Also some schools are complete dumps. And it's almost like your in a jail because you spend almost 1/4 of your life there (if you live to be at least 60).

At my school, we are forced into education until we are 16. The school board believes when we are 16, we are old enough to make our own decisions, with Parent's Permission

sorry i have to disagree with that one. i found that being surrounded by ALOT of different people helps you to find yourself. and what better place to be surrounded by different people than with school?

Hm. I don't think it should be illegal. It should be their own choice. You force them to go to school and they will despise it and show "bad" behavior. (Even though if they behaved just fine, they would be out quicker.)

Anyway, it shouldn't be illegal, although I do agree that the education is important for your future job. People say they would rather be learning about life than math or science and thats fine for them. Other people who might be a scientist one day, however, actually require math and science. Sure, some things in school seem pointless, but whatever.

School takes up 12 years. And then you have what? 30, 40, 50 or however many years left to live. Compared to that, 12 years isn't that much. Plus if you ask most adults who drop out, they say they would rather go back to school and graduate.

Tch. But this is all just in my opinion.

    I thought it was 16...
Education is very important to have when you go on in life, like getting a job and kids can meet new people at school.
But I don't think it should be forced onto someone, they should have a choice.
If someone wants to have a education then fine, but if someone else don't want it then whatever.

People at school are linear, most of them are the same. You have people in different groups true, but the number of groups are at maximum 10, and you'd only stay with your friends most the time, you'd not be likely to go and meet a new group of people.

Also, if everyone didn't go to school, it doesn't mean you'd stay home all day, eventually your going to go out meet loads of people in your area, from differnt ages, ethnic backgrounds, thoughts, beliefs, etc. That is a good way to meet people and you are not restricted to the 4 walled classroom you'd see everyday

But yeah, you should be able to pick.

If you'd only stay with your friends during school, then why would you go out and meet new people in the world?

What, because if you're not in school, you won't have anybody to talk with? So you'd have to go and talk to and meet new people. You do the same thing when you're in school and you make friends in the first place.

    Just a thought.

Like most people said, not attending school shouldn't be illegal to begin. It should only be a matter of choice and not law though I doubt any parent would want their kid growin' up stupid unless said parent would personally see to them getting an education, as long as it's not the 'wrong one'

School isn't only for learning basic skills, (mathematics, writing, reading, ect) but for learning how to interact with other people. This is crucial. School needs to be mandatory until the end of 7th grade, at least.

It by all means should be illegal. If kids could get what they want and not go to school, the US would lose so many opportunities for capable individuals to reach their potential.

But then again, it's their choice. It's what they want to do, no matter how stupid it sounds. It's ultimately a matter of choice and it really isn't harming anyone's property or whatever to begin with

I think that more students would want to attend school (middle, high school) if they had an opportunity earlier to perfect what they're interested in. For example, I hate school because the one that I go to is relatively revolving around math and science. If my school was more artsy, I'd probably want to be there. Even with electives, students still have core classes they are required to take. Specialty schools are normally either extremely expensive, colleges, or extracurricular. Or at least here.

Neither does public nudity, but its a felony. The point is, kids aren't old enough to make good choices as big as that. Like it or not, its a psychological and legal fact. All kids would skip school, and we would be royally screwed as a nation once they become adults. It is not a matter of choice.

Middle to high school yes, elementary no. That's the problem, elementary school kids wouldn't go to school, and therefore wouldn't be scholastically able begin middle school or high school, nor would they want to because of the lack of development of their maturity.

I do not believe it should be forced...

However, you must realize that public education is for the benefit of the student.

I do believe our public education is vital for the proper development of the child, but our education system is heavily flawed, and outdated... it could be much better.

While the US education system is far from perfect, it is very good in certain areas (New York, Texas and California are the three best based on national test scores). And even where the education is terrible, it is slowly but surely improving. And you must admit that even a sub par education is better both mentally and psychologically than no education. If it isn't mandatory, the unemployment percentages will skyrocket, which will be good for educated people unable to find a job, but bad for... well the people who weren't educated because they were kids just being kids and doing what seemed fun.
