It's been a while since I have read the books and no I haven't spent my classes analysing them xD but I think the books are great! Katniss can appear an uncaring and standoffish character but I kind of see that she has had to be quite maternal and had to grow up a lot faster than supposed to which could be why she developed such a tough skin for the world and doesn't let many people in. Of course, she is increadibly caring as you will see through her dedication to Prim, her sister. She is angry a lot but again I can just see that from her psychology (I won't elaborate because spoilers).

Also, on the topic of it being rushed into trusting someone, I think Katniss feels lonely and because this girl reminds her of her sister she feels more homely with her and if there is anyone in the world that Katniss trusts and loves wholeheartedly it's her sister. Plus
she probably realises that if Rue wanted to kill her then she would have done it already instead of treating her wounds with leaves and stuff.

I think you can really see how she develops through the story- this was one thing I thought was quite good because of everything that happens of course she is going to go a little mad.

I personally think reading the books is a good thing just to see for yourself because everyone will view them differently. I think I enjoyed them a lot more a while ago compared to if I was to read them now because I have an English a level and GCSE between the first reading so I had no idea what good writing was.

I think that if you're considering reading them, you might as well. It'll only take like, a weekend (if that) because they're such easy reads. Personally, I liked them. The world that the author creates is pretty interesting. My only gripe is that the last book is a bit of a let down, so I'm looking forward to see how the movies interpret it. So far, the movies have been good, with the sequel being probably better than the first, which bodes well for what is to come.

LEXI I AM SORRY I TOTALLY MISSED YOU
but yes I am very concerned about the love triangle in the whole "Katniss as a female protag." If the love triangle takes precedence over her personal mission/quest or HER CHARACTER ENTIRELY then we gon have problems

She's literally Bella from Twilight, but somehow casted in a fantasy universe. She's also like Jodie in Beyond: Two Souls where she has strong moments just where it's clear the script calls for it.

No Lemonade love? How could u

But yeah, CocoRosie is great. I am very partial towards Beautiful Boyz, Lemonade, and Tearz for Animals. I am also a sucker for End of Time. But my absolute favorite live performance from them is this Fairy Paradise one.

Read it, but completely ignore the last chapter. It has the worst excuse for a cliff-hanger I've ever read. It would have been much better to have the entire last chapter as chapter 1 of Catching Fire.

If you're still looking for opinions...
It was about the time the first movie came out that I read the books for the first and only time (borrowed the books from a coworker and finished them all in about four evenings). I heard all the hype and I figured I'd at least have a background if I felt the need to defend/bash the series (which is the same reason I tortured myself through Twilight *shudders*). The books were okay. Not outstanding, not horrible. Felt like a lot of the deaths were glossed over. Understandable when you're reading the main character's POV, but it left me feeling like not much happened and the direness of the situation got a little shafted (unless you invest all/most your empathy in Katniss, which is kinda forced on you since the other characters aren't shown too much background/development). One of those series that I am not upset that I read it, but I don't plan on reading them again any time soon.

    James my friend

The day we debate against each other has come again.

No, she is not like Bella. At all. Katniss is already grown up, and yes, there may be a love triangle thing going, but she herself says (and I quote):

She doesn't try to force drama upon the situation, she just wants to go home to her sister.

She's also pretty hot and Jennifer Lawrence can actually act, so yeah.

See, I interpret that as adding more drama by making the other parties work for it. She switches from boy worshiping to then getting worshiped when it suits the script

If you want to read the Hunger Games, I say go for it! Not only is it an easy read (as others have already stated in earlier posts), it's an enjoyable one.

In a sense, the film differs more from the first book than the second (or so I heard). The first film missed out on so many components of the first book, such as for example, Katniss becoming deaf in one ear, and the mention of Madge (Mayor's daughter of district 12 and Katniss' best friend) giving her best friend the Mockingjay pin.

They did step it up when they changed directors however for this new film. Most of it this time stayed true to the book, which do not often tend to happen with these types of movies.

that's right, how dare she be disinterested in romantic melodrama when children are killing each other and people are starving

That would be a valid point if she actually cared about the fact that kids were killing each other and other people besides herself were starving

As Tummer said, she doesn't get disinterested because of anything regarding plot. It's not even because sense. It's just an attempt to write a chapter about boys worshiping the girls they're chasing... and not in the analytical way, but in the empowerment fantasy way.[DOUBLEPOST=1386101430][/DOUBLEPOST]

Actually, I'm responding to this twice because you did a logic jump.

    >You're an outspoken feminist
    >Defending the fact she takes time to be disinterested in romantic melodrama
    >Ignoring that she takes the time during a war between child soldiers to go "Umm... I just can't choose which boy I like!"
    >Probably not a book for said outspoken feminist

That's not advancing female characters, or even writing one remotely well. It might as well be from the perspective of a man who just thinks girls twirl their hair and don't want to think of anything except their man.

I think if you want to then go for it. They're fairly easy reads and have some quite good bits. However I hate Mockingjay and how she ended the series with a passion. The books had a lot of potential but the last book just really really annoyed me. The first book is quite good and the second is decent, but the third one left me unhappy.

Well the point of the thread is that I haven't read the books, so I can't really speak from a position of knowledge here. A big part of my interest in the series is that it's being discussed quite a lot from a feminist perspective (sometimes positively and sometimes negatively). I hear a lot that the book becomes very much about the love triangle, more than perhaps about Katniss the character, in the final two books; I also hear that Katniss is relatively disinterested in the romantic conflicts and just kinda wants to go home. So I don't really know what's going on lol. It just seems odd to point out her lack of interest in choosing between guys as if it's a bad thing.

I got a good deal on the paperback box set so :B Will try to finish them up soon~

Pffft, thread over gaiz. she got 'em!

Nah, my point wasn't in that she won't choose being a bad thing. It's just her way of just suddenly losing interest feels like shoehorned melodrama.
