Short Story Contest October 2008

Well, October starts tomorrow, and today, this contest's first round starts and runs all through October~

I'm going to see if I can get this moved to the Creativity Corner like the Poetry Contest CtR does, but I want to be safe and post it here.

This month's theme is "Suspense/Mystery"

You must start with this liiitle idea.

You're at home watching <insert show here> when you hear a faint scratching at the door. Upon opening it, you see a small dog looking up at you. You examine the dog's collar and see a phone number and the message "If you find this cat, call this number immediately." (Yes, that's right, cat.) Against your better judgment, you call the number. Two hours later you find yourself in a basement with two dead bodies on the floor. What happened?

RULES:

ONE story per person. You can't post another one, but if you want you can edit the old one or replace it entirely, as long as the old one is no longer in the contest.

There has to be at least a few paragraphs, not an exact number, but you should, as a writer, understand what is enough. As long as you have the point down, it's fine. The recommended minimum has yet to be decided, but I'd say 25. You can have 24, or 23 or around their, but as long as you feel it is a rich enough story.

Judges are something I'm thinking about, though most likely I will be the only one.

Do not steal a story from anywhere, it has to be original.

Keep the story to a PG 13 level, including language. Accepted words are ass, hell and damn, but besides that all other cuss words shall be starred (***) out or have stars between them.

Any number of people can enter each month. If there are less than four stories, which may be possible seeing as this might not be the most successful contest, then the contest will be called off for the month.

But, can it be anything about hope? Like omsebody having hope or losing it? Does it matter, as long as it relates to hope? o.o

Anyways, count me in! I absolutely love writing short stories, although I seem to never be able to finish them so I don't have many, I'd adore being able to participate. You might have me turning it in at 11:00 on October 27th, but I'll get it to you. xD

I could try when the correct theme comes... I can't get any spark from hope...

I'd be so in... But hope? A theme for the month of October? Ttly should be something macabre. Ah well, I might give it a shot anyway.

Also, ORANGE sent me some ideas to keep the judging less bias and the writing easier. The winner of each month can be the judge for the next 'un, and if that judge wants then they can choose another person to judge with them.

Judge helpers and judges can write a story, but they are not allowed to evaluate their own in the running. This month, if I do not "adopt" a judge helper, then I will not write a story.


Writing a story about such a broad topic as "hope" can be difficult, as ORANGE pointed out. It was suggested that a sentence that must start the story to be used to help shorten the category. If the topic changes, don't be surprised to see a necessary starting sentence.


On a different note, Rosey contacted back and says she has no authority over the spam zone. I might ask CtR instead to move this to the Original Works section of the Creativity Corner.

So like, you'll definitely have to ask him first since I haven't said anything yet, but Destiny's Force is more than just a ****ing amazing writer. He tends to point out everything that augments or kills a story, and still be fair. Might be a good judge. CTR is good too, but she running the poetry contest, and she's got college stuff going on also. How does he do eet? Oh wait, DF's in college too, I think. Hmm... We shall have to childernap them.

I had it for PG? I meant to say PG 13 o.o

I already know what a good writer Destiny's Force is, and also Shades would be a good judge (seeing as on all the storys I've written or read he helps fix it and gives ideas.)

ORANGE also is, as I said before, a possible judge. I might go through the thing without a helper judge this month though :P

We'll have to see.​

 

If you're looking for prompt ideas, I've actually got a few. I've taken to looking for 'em n' I'll post the few that I like - I suppose we can maybe vote n' choose from there depending on what people like. C:

This one's a little bit darker n' again I feel like I'd have trouble takin' it seriously with writin' - but you certainly could get creative with it.

I'm still thinking lulzy here. TBH maybe it shouldn't be something TOTALLY serious?

lolol, more serious now? xD you maynot like any of 'em, 'tis up to you. I'm generally a more comedic writer in the first place.

Also, feel free to just call me Orange, no need to capitalize the whole thing unless you want to. xD People are always so formal with me lately, no need for it. C:
