Not so much fake as it was pointless, which is pretty much what I meant by "gratuitous." I figured a word to denote the sheer fucking mass of it all was more important than a word to emphasize what is a dreadfully common practice in anime. Like either make a statement with it or move that shit outta the way, I'm trying to watch these big honkers punch each other.

    FOR

    NO

    RAISIN

    ...Well

actually apparently Rebuild is building on that (OR SHOULD I SAY REBUILDING HNERK)

but everything else is basically confirmed to be in there to elicit unwarranted oohs and ahhs

Even the name Evangelion is just supposed to sound cool

Doesn't matter cause you are still wrong. Calling the overuse of Judeo-Christian symbols "fake" is an inaccurate description. As fake is defined as "a thing that is not genuine; a forgery or sham." By saying the Tree of the Sephiroth is "fake" would imply it wasn't a real symbol of the Hewish faith to begin with. if anything its appearance is, at worse, pointless or at best, just there because it looks cool.

They're going to do something with it? Interesting.

Ehhhh I'm still not sold on it

People are saying there are hints that Rebuild is actually a continuation, not a remake

which immediately draws my thoughts to the "7 reincarnations of the universe" hooplah that crops up in a couple mythologies, Jewish mysticism included if I'm not mistaken

Not that the signs aren't there, the argument's convincing

What I'm not sold on is this being, y'know, a decent idea plot-wise

I'm just terrified everyone's gonna relapse and die neurotic again, and ruin all my good impressions of the new series

When I say that all the religious symbolism is "fake," I'm referring to that symbolism in the context of the show. Yes, the Tree of Sephiroth is present in the show and yes it's a very powerful symbol in the context of the Jewish faith, but it isn't symbolic for anything in the context of Neon Genesis Evangelion.

I actually kind of like how all the Judeo-Christian symbolism is totally meaningless. It keeps the show from being all preachy to those of us who understand that it's meaningless and gives me a reason to recommend it to my super religious older sister because she'll love the series for it no matter how meaningless it is.

    ...What

    No that's

    exactly the problem

It is trying to be preachy

    and failing

It's possible to implement religious symbolism as a substantial part of the narrative without it being overt or alienating to other cultures

What Evangelion does is try to pretend all of these symbols are meaningful and important, thus fooling the ignorant and weirding out everyone else

Really? It never seemed that way to me. I just see it as a way of drawing in people who are already religious without alienating the people who are smart enough to realize that it doesn't mean anything. If it comes off as preachy to anyone else, they're probably the kind of people whose intelligence level makes them liable to buy into it anyway. You clearly know better than me, though, so I'll accept what you said as fact.

    That's what no

What religious person can you think of who would be attracted to Eva

It's got gratuitous blood and murder and cursing and boobage and ephebophilia and giant monsters and LIVING IN SIN!!

The symbolism is trying to go YEEGLE WARBLE FLARGLE YARGH THE END TIMES ARE UPON US

Christian symbolism is popular in Japan because it's mysterious, not because they want everyone to be Christian

    That's an American thing

Well, there's my sister who may as well be the poster girl for those Facebook posts that say "I LOVE GOD! LIKE AND SHARE IF YOU DO TOO, KEEP SCROLLING IF YOU WANNA GO TO HELL." She thinks all the symbolism makes up for it somehow. It's actually kind of funny. She could find a "deep" religious message in Lucky Star if I told her it had one. I don't get it, but I'm not going to question it.

    Gonna call that an outlier

Most rads would condemn the show and anyone watching it to the bowels of bloody hell
