As much as I love Evangelion right now, I agree with you on Shinji. I wouldn't say he's the worst character ever, but he's definitely a pretty weak character. He's almost weaker Martha on Doctor Who, and in the same way.

Terribly unpredictable. Loyalty is the best thing about her, and that can start to feel stifling after a while.

Evangelion is just full of pretentious **** I mainly watched it for the awesome animation (which in the anime pops up in like 3 episodes wow)
The movies are definitely full of the better animation.

But about Shinji, I like him. I relate to him because like him I am also a week nilly just doing things so others can accept me.

 

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the pretentious vibe might be from all the religious symbolism that didn't really exist at all. In fact, one of my favorite things about Evangelion is the fact that there's so much "symbolism" that's really just there to look good. The real symbolism is actually somewhat deep.

 

None of that interferes with the plan casual sex with three women while he beats the heck out of giant monsters with his giant mecha.

Kaworu/Shinji stuff isn't really fanservice considering they're pretty much as gay for eachother as can be without ****ing.

Of course that movie as a whole was just

Casual sex doesn't really exist for Shinji. He's scared of people and the only focus on his mind tends to be Gendo. If his dad TOLD him to go bang someone then he might try and do it but Shinji's mostly focused on his dependence on Asuka and the approval of his daddy.

It also doesn't help that his only role model in terms of sex is well...

I'd like to know this too. At best, he's an exceptionally well done bad idea.

 

Because

1. the "Refusing the call" character fit perfectly into the climate of its time, where many existing mechas casually glossed over a child's willingness to become a soldier, pilot a giant death robot and kill other living things to save his/her own life. The archetype rang truer to life than many of its contemporaries, in addition to being an interesting archetype from any angle and welcome in the pursuit of variety
2. Shinji's daddy issues are both palpable and organic, and the range of advice he receives from other characters about it is also natural-sounding and leads to moments where he has a flicker of understanding about his father
3. the combination of these presents Shinji with a realistic conflict of interests: where he recognizes the power he has and the responsibility that comes with it, and wants to make his father proud; but on the other hand pines for a normal life with his friends and family and becomes distraught the more he realizes he may never have that - thus torn between selfishness or suffering

Rebuild further enhances his character by

1. taking him out of his damnable head once in a while to actually interact with the other characters instead of constantly blow them off to think about his dad. Even if he is still awkward and antisocial as a whole, this makes it far more bearable
2. giving him a wider range of emotions - some happy moments, some sad moments, some excited or agitated or embarrassed or angry moments - as well as more concrete, healthy emotional bonds with people who aren't his dad, his psycho roommate, or his ephebo mother figure
3. actually rewarding him for his hardship at certain intervals, a trend which hopefully means the ending won't be a pointless, status-quo downer ending where everyone must suffer because Evangelion is suffering

He's a character that's hard to write but that doesn't mean he's a bad character. You just have to be aware of the speed bumps. Rebuild shows much better attention to detail in terms of characters, and that alone puts it ahead of the original thus far. People can complain that it's just an action show now, but if they stripped away all the stupid pretentious bullshit, plagiarizing old dead white men, and gratuitous Christian symbolism from the original and this is what was left, what were we really watching it for if not to see teenagers cry and giant cyborgs eat each other?

 

You mean fake Christian symbolism, right? All those crosses and stuff are completely meaningless.

 

The crosses are a minor thing compared to the rest of the Judeo-Christian Symbolism. For example, the mass produced Evas forming the Tree of the Sephiroth (aka the Tree of Life), a symbol of Jewish mysticism, in The End of Evangelion.

 

Thus why I added "and stuff" in there.
