Okay, I know there's a lot of hype about the new movie but has anyone seen the TV series Sherlock? It returned with it's second series on New Years Day here, I've been really lucking forward to it's return and it did not dissapoint. It's amazing, better than the movie in my opinion, although they have completely different takes on him. The series is set in modern times but it works brilliantly, it's fast moving, full of twists and the way they show his interlect is really good. However, it can get confusing and you have to stay awake to keep up with it. But I really enjoy it and would recomend it.

Has anyone else seen it and your thoughts?

I never managed to see the first series, but the second series has certainly started very well. I enjoyed it immensely. i liked the twists and turns it took with the story (all based on original Conan Doyle stories of course) were fast and complex. In addition, the way it's been updated really appeals to me, because it really brings the stories to a new generation. Benedict Cumberbatch reminds me of a young Alan RIckman, and his acting perfectly portrays the character of Sherlock. Can't wait for more episodes ^^.

OMG I love Sherlock! It's just brilliant! I love how all the characters translate to a modern setting and how the cases are faithful to the original stories.

And sherlock being hot doesn't hurt the show

I watched this once as I was bored, and then found myself watching more and more and more.
I like it very much, the plot is interesting, funny in places and then just lovely, and whatshisname who plays Sherlock is rather lovely himself.
I think I may prefer the second series to the first, don't know why though.

I just watched the first episode of this last night, and I must say, I love the way they portray Sherlock. it's different than usual, they almost show him as sinister. And I love John, he's just a wonderful character, the actor is amazing, as is Benedict Cumberbatch.

The episodes are long, so I haven't yet found the time to watch another, but you bet I will.

I love this series! To be honest this is actually the best portrayal of Sherlock Holmes to me. Though I only read A Study in Scarlet and watched the recent movies, so that and this is pretty much my only exposure to the whole story. Sucks that I have to wait for the 2nd series to show up on Netflix though since I live in NA and the web player at BBC doesn't broadcast here (something about rights).

I caught up with Sherlock two days ago, and I have so many feelings about it it's ridiculous.

    Benedict Cumberbatch is an amazing actor. He really caught my attention during the first episode, and overall puts up a great performance, as does Martin Freeman (and hell, the entire cast). By far my favorite episode has to be a Scandal in Belgravia, and the Reichenbach Fall soon afterwards. Although I never read any of the original Sherlock stories before, I've downloaded a few on my iPod, and am enjoying them immensely. Doyle is a genius. ;~;

I did not realise there was a thread of thisss. Anyway. Been watching with Plums and I've been really enjoying it! B.C. is a great actor, and Martin Freeman is just amazing. Not to mention Andrew Scott oh my good lord. His Moriarty is just. Brilliant. Could not have picked a better actor.
I really love how the stories were adapted, as well. Having read a few of them, they really go togther well! The script is great and. I really can't think of anything bad to say about the show in general! Can't wait for more, if it happens.

    It's BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thoughts on the new episode? Do you think that last explanation was how it actually happened or not?

Personally I really enjoyed it, it took me by surprise at the start when they did all the theories about how he did it. I'm still not sure if the final one was right or not, so in a way it's a little fustrating that we still don't know for definite. They did use a lot of popular theories (here were ours from shortly after watching) though with the ball under the armpit trick, I'd expected him to use the ball he was messing with when he was talking to Molly before the fall.

I do love Mary though, I quite like her and I'm looking forward to seeing a bit more of her. Did you know she's Martin Freeman's actual wife? Likewise Sherlock's parents were played by Benedict's actual parents.

Oh and thank god the moustache is gone. I hated it so so much.

Just watched the second episode of series 3. This show, after leaving us hanging for two years, is actually breaking my heart because of how much is being put into Mary and Sherlock's relationship. I just hope that some of my theories about next Sunday's episode are incorrect.

What the huh? You mean @Twelve hasn't posted here yet >.< The world is ending!!

I personally like the show. It depicts Sherlock as the psychopath I personally believe him to be. I know he's referred to as a sociopath in the series but that's questionable. Overall the show is wonderful. Even though there aren't that many episodes per season they are each one hour long. Sadly I haven't got to watch the newer episodes (yet) because I no longer have cable *sniff*

In my opinion the movies don't do as much service as this series does, though Robert's portrayal of Sherlock is stupendous. I like the more gray area heroes. The kind of hero who, while being heroic, can do some of the shady stuff you'd expect a villain to do. And this series does Watson a whole lot more justice than the movies.

It's a marvelous series and definitely one of my favorites.

Anyone else wanting to see a Sherlock and DW crossover? XD

You are right, I suppose it is up to me to save the world and set this right xD

So, thoughts on the whole series now that it has concluded?

    The Empty Hearse
I was greatly amused by this and really shows how Moffiss likes to incorporate the fans into their show, I feel like Anderson has become the fans personified in the show xD as we finally have the answer we have been dying to have for 2 years we have no need for our insane theories xD

I thought how he actually did it to be underwhelming but in the grand scheme of the episode, I felt like it didn't even matter, it was secondary to the reactions of Watson and the introduction of Mary. I love Mary. What a legend.

Also, I love how Sherlock's parents are played by Benedict Cumberbatch's real parents and their normality really contrasts Sherlock and Mycroft weirdness. I also really like the development of the brother's relationship throughout the series, like in this one you can see that they are similar but Sherlock, although more clueless about human nature, is less lonely because he has John, Lestrade and Mrs Hudson while Mycroft resides in the government with all his power being surrounded only by people who work with him. Like he doesn't really know what a relationship is and hides his solitude and loneliness so much that he doesn't even realise it himself because he has never known any different. Sherlock points this out and I think that point in the episode is quite nice, because it shows Mycroft outsmarting Sherlock in a "I'm your big brother, I'm better than you!" but Sherlock uses it to uncover how he is better than Mycroft because he has friends.

Another thing that was developed strongly in this episode was Sherlock's human side, when he's deducing and those thoughts fly into his head like "show off" which also shows how out of place he has become and how affected he is by John's rejection and perhaps is trying to impress others again.

    The Sign of three
This is easily my favourite episode of Sherlock ever! Brilliantly done, I love just everything about it, drunk Sherlock was hilarious and him trying to apply science to drinking was great xD and the format of Sherlock talking to all the girls online was done really well because it would be quite hard to do that nicely I think butthey managed it.

I thought the cinematography of it all was just beautiful and I loved the solution as well as the inclusion of the message from "CAM (Charles Magnessun from episode 3)" wishing them happiness on their wedding day and seeing how Mary's face drops.

I just want to know what "the sign of three" actually refers to- is it John, Mary and Sherlock or John, Mary and the baby? Either way, I liked that deduction and the speech was just brilliant. I don't think I have anything bad to say about this episode... I just love it.

    His last Vow
Although I really enjoyed this episode, I thought the ending wasn't very Sherlock, I was expecting some clever solution as opposed to just death but I do like how it shows how far Sherlock will go for John (therefore Mary).

The twist with Mary was nicely done, I didn't see it coming really but I still don't understand why she didn't just kill Magnessun when she shot Sherlock. I think this was explained but I need to rewatch this episode.

THAT DEATH SCENE! That was just beautiful, and it was nice to see the Mind Palace personified.

The cliffhanger was cool, I can't wait to see how Mariarty did it, I think this cliffhanger isn't as big as the last one which is nice because although it was nice theorizing for 2 years, it's nice to have a less strenuous cliffhanger for the hardcore fans xD It also makes me very happy that he comes back because his character was just too brilliant to die, I also like the idea that Moriarty is what the Master is to the Doctor, they will forever battle but neither will ever die. So the future is looking bright : D

Also, due to the success of series 3, BBC are pushing for more to be made rather quickly with the possibility of a christmas special! Of course, nothing confirmed yet but I would love that! It also means we only have about a year to wait for more.

He actually says the words 'sign of three' in the episode when trying to tell them that Mary was pregnant after his vow. He says something like 'You knoow the sign of three...' I'm not sure how he actually said it but he meant it as the sign she was pregnant. I was just sat there watching and noticed it and was like 'oooh that's a clever way of slipping it in'. It wasn't until after the episode was over I realised that was the name of the ep, I just noticed it as I recognised it as a sherlock holmes book.

Also something of interest from The Empty Hearse, http://whoops-i-ate-erens-mum.tumblr.com/post/72065282050/finalproblem-im-so-tired-but-i-cant-go-to

I've read a fair bit of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes, but I've yet to dip into any of the numerous adaptions based from them. I do intend to watch Granada Holmes at some point, for Jeremy Brett's practice of enforced method acting simultaneously fascinates and awes me.

Moffat's writing has garnered a whole lot of criticism, primarily concerning his supposed maltreatment of women and the general lack of racial diversity in whatever he writes. Any truth to these criticisms?

I have heard a lot of people moan about his writing but never on these topics. I don't find he mistreats women in his writing and I also don't see where the lack of racial diversity comes from either. I am a fan of his work and in what I have seen there is a large diversity of ethic groups in the shows so if these criticisms are simply coming from his casting of the new Docctor then they seem a little unfair (a lot of people wanted a woman Doctor or a black Doctor) but I don't think his choice was particularly malicious against either group.

That is my take on it though xD In Sherlock S1E2 the whole episode is based on a Chinese smuggling group, and in Sherlock's hiatus he traveled the world which he shows. As for the women, I find they get in trouble but then so do the men so it's not really gender specific. There are also examples in Doctor who but I won't dig those out because I am lazy xD

Some people may disagree or say his writing is complex but I think it's genius in intertwining ideas and really surprising the viewers with the solutions etc. Especially in Sherlock which warrants the complex ideas more than Doctor Who as that is what you want, you want the smart deductions that make you think and catch you off guard. Anyway, ramble over :3 I think the series is brilliant, just the idea of Sherlock Holmes in modern society amuses me and I forget that he was originally from the 19th Century. Also, they are true to the canon of Sherlock Holmes (not really true to the books because they have been adapted a lot and spliced together, recreated to make something new) but that isn't a bad thing in any way. Yeah, I'd recommend them :3
