Naw, they have an "er" sound, but not when it's pronounced wrong. Japanese vowels are like this:

A: Ahh
E: Eh
O: Oh
I: Ee
U: ooh

Since, in "Near" The e and A make a combination of "Ee", they are replaced with an I, and the R is replaced with an A, making it Nia (Nee-yah)
