What do you think was the saddest death in an anime or manga that you have seen or read?

Actually, I thought the death of L from Death Note was pretty sad.

I mean He thought of Light as a friend and also Misa, then the fact that, well if you know the story, you know what I'm talking about but yeah.

So, Seriously what was the saddest for you?

EDIT by Styx: Be cautious around spoilers, please!

Maes Hughes from Fullmetal Alchemist. Both the English and Japanese version made me cry. Except, the Japanese version was more emotional so I cried a bit harder when I watched it in Japanese. XD
And since his daughter kept saying to not bury him and why they are burying him during the funeral, it made it a lot worse. His death really caught me off guard. I didn't think he'd die.

    Warning, Claymore spoilers:

Jeane's Death in the last episode. I suppose you could have seen her death coming but just the way it happened... holy hell. It was really sad, especially since she was my favorite character in the series. :[

    Either that or...

    Warning, Elfen Lied spoilers

Mariko and Kurama's death together. I never really liked Mariko but when she finally got to meet her real father (Kurama) Kurama chooses to die with her by having the explosives inside Mariko's body detonate while he is holding her in his arms. What really made it sad is before the explosives detonate, Kurama pictures what it would have been like if they had lived a normal life together. I guess you would have to watch to understand how tragic the whole story really is...

I definately say that it's L from Death Note. It was so sad and almost brought me to tears.

The death of Shirley from Code Geass was upsetting as well. I didn't expect that.

I also think the death of Ulquiorra from Bleach was pretty sad but it's not as big.

Yeah, definitely this one. Not to mention Mustang's reaction, And then Edward when he found out, it was just one of the most tear-jerking times I've seen.
I agree about L from Death Note as well, especially how right before it he was in the rain saying he was going to die.

    S-CRY-ed spoilers ahead
This had a lot of sad deaths. Kimishima and Scheris were the worst. When Kimishima was injured the first time, I thought he was dead and it was pretty sad. Then when he died while Kazuma was carrying him and Kazuma didn't notice until Kanami realized something wrong. Kazuma kept telling Kimishima to stop joking around while Kanami started crying and then as the episode ended, the screen went black and you hear Kazuma's voice breaking as he said, "Kimishima?" It was horrible, especially after how he was such help in the previous fight. Then Kazuma went on a rampage and it just made it worse.
Then when Scheris sacrificed herself to bring Ryuho back to life. Ryuho couldn't cry until Kazuma told him that it was okay or that he should, I can't remember. He started sobbing and yelled her name. That scene was so big because of Kazuma and Ryuho's relationship.
Cougar's first "death" was sad, too. I really thought he died...and then when he did, the scene they put it in just didn't make it sad in my opinion.
When Ayase found out her brother died and loses the will to live and dies afterward as well...
Sigmar's death wasn't that sad, but it was still something....
Damn, this was a depressing show
Oh, and going back to Death Note, Raye Penbar's wife and Light's dad were also sad deaths.
It may not be the greatest anime, but Naruto: The third Hokage's funeral was tear-jerking.

    Code Geass:
Shirley's father's death was sad because the effect it had on her and Lelouch. When she lost her memories, I really started tearing up lol
Then her death was also pretty awful.
And of course, in the end, Lelouch.
And the way his plan fell together just made it even more memorable.
    Oh yeah
Third season of Digimon, Leomon died.
When I saw that as a kid, I hit my tv.

There's many others but I can't remember them all at the moment.

    Anime spoiled: Clannad

Ushio Okazaki's death from Clannad. it was the saddest thing. My goodness. Mainly because at that point, poor Tomoya has lost everything. And he finally decides to be a good father and provide for her. He has nothing. No job, the love of his life died, his friends are scattered around Japan and the world and...Then his little girl dies, in his arms, in the snow. I was crying so hard I fell to the floor and slept there. xDD It was awfully sad.

I cried so hard when Wrath died. I'm not entirely sure why. Probably the way he died. It was pretty gruesome. @_@

    Wolf's Rain:
    Just about everyone died, so it kind of goes without saying. They all had me crying. ;~;

You know that's technically not canon, right?
The anime and OVA creators kind of destroyed the ending. >>
Even Watsuki was like "wtf" about it.

Anyway. All of this is manga version.

    NORA: Last Chronicle of Devildom
Even though he's supposed to be the bad guy, Fall's death really made me tear up. Runner up for this is probably Barik's sacrifice.

    InuYasha
    Kagura's death. Out of all the things that have died in InuYasha, Kagura's death scene was emotional in the manga - but then I saw it animated and was like ;___;
Mainly because in her final moments Sesshoumaru comes to see her, and it's one of the rare times he shows that he cares about someone.

And as a saddest series overall, Wolf's Rain is pretty damn depressing. Great story, but my god.

Hah, I feel bad for clicking all the spoilers and potentially ruining dozens of anime shows for me. xD

    I honestly didn't find
L's death that sad, I was more traumatised by Light's end to be honest.

    Elfen Lied:
Pretty much all deaths in this were sad, seriously ;-; The death of a little dog was pretty sad in itself. xD

But I agree with rvr, the combined death of Mariko and her father was the worst of them all. :/

    Dragonball Z

The death of Future Gohan. It made me sad seeing how Trunks mentor and closest friend (who was like a brother) died because he got double teamed and was fighting with one arm. Also the fact that unlike most of the other deaths in DBZ Gohan couldn't have been brought back to life because there were no dragonballs and that earth lost it's greatest hope.

I kno! but truth be told they could have been way better w/ the astukiyaki. I knew deridaa,Itachi, and Sasori were gonna die cuz the TV made it so oblivious! The at the end the death wasn't anything great cause you knew! still...it was kinda sad for sasori but deridaa and itachi deserved it.
