...they literally stopped right before the action scene...

4 EPISODES SINCE THE LAST FIGHT SCENE.

I'd be ok with that if the writing and dialogue and plot and characters were enough to make up for it, but so far, they're not. And this episode was so damn short, they might as well have waited another week or something, just so there was more than "CHARACTERS LAND ON GROUND, RUBY AND WEISS ARE ON A TEAM LIKE YOU TOTALLY DIDN'T SEE IT COMING"

At least the next episode will finally have some combat.

I'm liking it, so it doesn't bothered me that it took so long. Though, honestly if they were going to make this episode so short (it's like 3 minutes long!) they should have just made it a part of the last episode.

And yeah, action! Now people can stop bitching about the lack of nonstop action, despite numerous statements from the team that the actual series would not be nonstop action.

I really enjoyed that last ep and finally seeing some action, seemed a little chaotic at points but it was good. DO NOT TOUCH YANG'S HAIR. I think Yang and Blake actually compliment eachother quite well (no suprise in the pairing), you know if you watch it back the first shadow that crossed Yang was Blake. Ruby and Weiss however well this challenge will be...hmmm...interesting. Ren was pretty awesome and I'm curious how unlocking Jaune's aura will affect him since he has a lot of it.

Also with Pyrrha (love her), I found out the origin of her name today and it kinda worries me if it's foreshadowing. If you want to know google at your own peril, possibly maybe spoilerish, not sure.

You know, with the whole Ruby/Weiss team I'm wondering if it is a subtle reference to Snow White and Rose Red.

Considering the color theme the names are going by that might be the case as Pyrrha is Greek for "flamed colored". Though she could also be named after Pyrrha of Greek Mythology (which is you look her up shows she survives a flood when her husband builds an ark) rather then . But given the name her partner's is derived from... yeah, but Pyrrha might! :D

You're a big stupid jerk and I hate you. So cute, but I wish she would say more than just nice mean things to Weiss. Weiss walks like she's perfect, and has that annoying bossy personality =.=

Oooh yeah, I hope you're right where her name comes from.

However some people have speculated the team JNPR might be pronounced Juniper, and since they seem to like their fairy tales, are you familiar with the Brothers Grimm one called the Juniper Tree? It's seriously weird and kinda bittersweet as well. With the stuff you were saying before, it kinda adds to it and makes your subtle feeling more likely. Saying that, it does also give a bit of hope if it does happen.

And there is a very subtle death theme in the team. Jaune Arc is an allusion to Joan of Ark who dies by being set on fire (and given Pyrrha means "flamed colored" this could possibly mean some horrible implications down the line).

Nora's last name is Valkyrie, a host of female figures who decide which soldiers die in battle and which live. Selecting among half of those who die in battle the Valkyries bring their chosen to the afterlife hall of the slain, Valhalla.

Lie Ren means "huntsman" in Chinese. It is self-explanatory what a huntsman does. Of course Lie also means "lotus" and Ren means "ardent", so he may be the odd man out.

And if your original assumption is correct about Pyrrha and she is named after Pyrrhus, then that means they'll get a victory down the line but at a great cost.

Now I just looked up the Juniper Tree fairy tale, there is a lot of death going on in there. Boy's mother dies, boy's stepmother decapitates him boy resurrects as a bird and sings a song about how his stepmother killed him, in the end the bird crushes her with millstone and comes back to life as a boy.

That newest episode was pretty decent for once, but I don't get why Yang got pissed off at all.

To be honest, this series' has been pretty disappointing when it came to things I find important like story, plot, voice acting, writing, and pacing, but the fight scenes, character designs, and music are just really good, so I'll try to finish it.

I figure it might have something to do with Blake stating the obvious whenever the characters did something.

Story and plot are the same thing. I'm curious though, what is it about the things you listed that you find disappointing?

Just a step up from those people who "marry" fictional characters.[IMG]

I just messing with ya please don't take my ribbing seriously.

No, story and plot are not the same thing, and too many people don't understand that.

Story is simply the events that take place. Pure information. Think a Wikipedia article.
Plot is the emotions, reactions, moods that characters experience during the events of the story.

RWBY's story has been, within 8 episodes, a typical shounen-anime story. Now this isn't exactly the problem (though it definitely doesn't help make it stand out.) Problem is the plot doesn't do much of anything unique.

Nothing that happens between the characters feels interesting: just old hat. Ruby is the overly emotional girl who crushes on Juan because...plot advancement as far as I can tell, Weiss is the cold bitch (who of course will come around), Yang is the hothead, Blake is the quiet one, and Juan is the comic relief who keeps messing up (but will, of course, end up being super powerful eventually.) The supporting cast actually seems stronger than all of these characters for the sheer fact that they aren't completely predictable arcs. I'm far more interested in what goes on with Ren, Nora, and Pyrrha.

Hell, the fact that the main cast are simple anime character archetypes could be forgiven if they were executed in unique ways. What I loved about the Homunculi in Fullmetal Alchemist was that, even though they were definitive villains, they each had some form of humanity to them, which gave an extra, unseen dimension to them. And Kamina in Gurren Lagann constantly tried to make himself look like the unstoppable badass, but the moment he sees a skull and is reminded of his failure dad, he regresses into a seemingly childish temper because he doesn't want to end up like him.

The sad thing is, I realize that, had Monty tried not to incorporate a full story/plot into the series, I feel like I could enjoy it more, such as with his Dead Fantasy animations. But by making them the focal point, I can't help but see the flaws, having watched many much better done anime/films/television series.

Definition of plot: the main events of a play, novel, movie, or similar work, devised and presented by the writer as an interrelated sequence.
Definition of story: an account of imaginary or real people and events told for entertainment.

They sound exactly the same. But whatever, that's not the point of this thread.

First, Ruby doesn't "crush" on Jaune. At least I never got that feeling. She seemed more like a socially awkward person when interacting with him to me, trying to make a friend in a new school where she doesn't have friends besides her sister who ditched her to force Ruby to make friends.

Second, Weiss' bitchy demeanor isn't exactly unwarranted when it comes to the times she interacted with Ruby on a few occasions. On their first meeting Ruby fell on Weiss' suitcases full of Dust, and if Ruby's sneeze is anything to go by, the stuff is extremely volatile. Falling on Weiss' luggage could possibly have blown them both up. You don't think you'd be a little angry at the clumsy girl who could have killed you by magic explosion? Ruby also seems to be very arrogant about her combat skills (which isn't unearned really) and reckless when fighting to the point she jumps directly in front of Weiss' magic attack to take out the enemy they were both focused on and charges a vastly superior foe head-on, alone, just because she has an over inflated sense of her combat prowess (at least that's what it seemed like to me). Both times almost getting killed. You wouldn't be frustrated over your seemingly suicidal partner?

Of course she's an over privileged, rich, teenage white girl so this sort of personality is not exactly unexpected. lol

Third, while Jaune is comic relief it is pretty much shown that he seems to excel at being a leader type then a fighter if the last episode is anything to go by. And considering he some how got into a school full of badass monster hunters in training means he can't be that bad in a fight. This doesn't mean he is competent, just means we aren't giving much credit. Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass and all that.

You may get your wish as the series goes on. They are working with a small team (with about one animator) so making like thirty minute episodes isn't exactly the most prudent thing to do without episodes maybe being released once a month, especially when your animator is a workaholic who gets maybe five hours of sleep tops on a good day when making one of these few minute long episodes. So the episodes are short and can't flush out the story faster like most anime that have a thirty minute run time for each episode.

As much as I like Dead Fantasy I will admit that it is basically a simplistic "Let's You Fight Him because awesome" fanfiction. Really well made simplistic fanfiction but a simplistic fanfic non the less. But it basically boils down to nonstop action with no plot. Which works for what it is. With Dead Fantasy you got two properties with known lore, get the hot chicks from them fight each other, push a few things up to eleven, and BOOM. There you go.

RWBY is different. I guess you could have told the story completely through silence which would have been cool for a while but that greatly restricts your storytelling abilities but I will be the first to admit there are a great many things that can they the story through character facial expressions and body language and such. Hell, look at the game Journey. No dialogue, no facial expressions, very subtle body language yet it is able to tell its story without them.

I agree with your sentiment, I don't agree with your assessment.
