Okay, so, I head over to work today. I expect today to be fantastic and filled with the chocolately goodness of life. Unfortunately, instanteously when I step in the door, I find something amiss amongst my co-workers. Everyone is behaving just a bit too much. Now, being the pessimistic boy I am, I find myself worried at the topic. But, whatever. I'm like a surfboard trying to go with the wave.

Little did I know that I was going to get so agitated by the silence of disobidience, that I would bail tragically. I realize that we are all supposed to follow our rules, but the fact that it became so strict today, it seemed a bit abnormal. In the middle of my six hour shift, my fourty year old co-worker tells me that the manager recently put up a strict policy for the employees due to our rebellious, yet steady work.

Ha, we were always noisy, so our d**kfa -- I mean, manager, told us. Well, unfortunately, our manager is a total twat. And didn't happen to notice that a store will always, and forever, be busy. So, I filed a complaint to the manager when I got lunch break. Now, I wasn't the only one. So, I guess you could say I wasn't much lonely on the subject. Three of my co-workers, who so happened to be in the same age group as I, filed complaints as well on how they should behave in front of people who are misbehaving themselves, and usually to the employees. And we can't do jackcrap about it.

Which, throws the slap at our manager saying "rules are meant to be broken". Now, let me finish this sentence more rationally. Rules are meant to be broken, no matter how much you care for the image of your store. Hell, we were even noisy and loud, yet we still and the image stayed intact, and wonderfully beautiful. Nothing seemed to be abnormal to us. But it seems to be relatively strange to our sixty something year old manager.

Manager then called me for a talking after my lunch break. Saying I was rather impulsive, and reckless. When, actually, I pointed out both in my complain and in the "lecture", that I was being rational by pointing out that strict laws are ******ed and shouldn't be needed. Especially when the "image" of your "precious" store, is still perfectly fine. God, it seems as if ineptitude is rather blunt today across the older application of society. But oh well.

What is your take on the situation? And rules themselves?

Well, I agree 100% rules pretty much are made to be broken. A store will never be quiet unless it's completely devoid of life. But I also understand where the old guy is comming from. He's old and old people like quiet and he's probably from a more strict and disciplined time.

dud e i hate to say this but i think your boss is right, work is work, not time to be loud and obnoxious. what exactly were these new strict rules?
and i dont think you should be silent or anything but if the noise level was bad enough for a manager to get involved you must have been pretty loud.

Actually, it was loud, but not too loud. And plus, I've been in my manager's office and you can't hear anything. And other only that, but a majority of the yelling is from the customers. We just socialize and get along, nothing wrong with that.

Sorry to say but I do disagree here with you. You are working there for money and paid to act a certain way and perform your job adequately. You did the right thing filing a complaint so that it could be discussed but your take on 'rules' is way too simple. Rules are not made to be broken. They were put there obviously because someone was being a reject and causing problems in the first place. Thus the rule was set to prevent further trouble from transpiring or someone might be losing a job. Most likely it also means that some customers complained.

Sure, some rules are worth breaking because they are in the way of logic etc but really, the way you see rules does make you appear to be reckless to your manager or anyone who you might have to work for. There are better jobs in which you can do more free talking etc, but the store isn't yours. You are paid for your time. If you don't like the job, you can always look for another that is more to your kind of way of thought but no matter where you work, there will always be some sort of guideline because a job is responsibility you are being paid for. I've quit jobs for the reason they were so tight-assed about stuff. It may be what you have to do too instead of fighting issues there if you can't talk to them about loosening things up a bit.

Sure. Work is work, and I'm paid to to do my job in a precise way, but I got so pissed at how straightened up even my friends were. It seems unrational of me to do so, but I did. Discussing with my boss, everything got settled out, and the manager tweaked the rules a bit to where it may have looked strict, but had loopholes around it where you could at least slouch the weight of strict policies off your back.

Personally, I find a job to at least be enjoyable at the least, and with so many rules and so much of a silent working life, then I might as well just have quit. But, I needed the money and that was the only store that would except me for my age difference.

Well, as I said, you really did the right thing by going and doing the complaint and talking it out. I hope that things will be less strict now that you had a chance to chat it out with your boss. It seems to me the reason he probably put the new rules up was because of some kind of complaint and now that he has your side too, perhaps it will get better. I don't like working in strict environments either so I hear what you are saying.

Your situation is difficult, a complaint would be right, since when you took the job you weren't signing up to these strict rules and regulations. Though really it is your choice whether you want to work their or not, you have to keep in mind your wagers or rules can change alot.

And a funny thing about laws and rules is that they can create order or even chaos. Too few or too many rules means we are either too free and too many means we have no freewill, we have to find a steady balance.

Ignore the boring prics who keep on sayen that 'you have to act a certain way since you are getting payed that way'. Yes, people do have to act a certain way, but, what your boss is doing is going too far since all you are doing is socializing. EIther way, you should enjoy what you do as your job, even if you are just 14. I'm just sayen, don't let him do this to you. ANd also, if he can't change his mind, then keep the job for now, but start job hunting. If you honostly cannot change his mind, then once you have a job, then quit him, because he obviously is not giving his workers fair enough working conditions.

I would not say that all rules are meant to be broken though. If there is a law or a rule that is being abused, and should not exsist, then I say that it should be redone, but if not, then take it easy and just abide by it. But this rule is something that you should not have to stand, since there is nothing wrong with socializing with others
