Pure truth, I actually think this was something that should be celebrated. So there weren't fireworks and explosions, so what? The data and information that this could potentially provide now is mindblowing.

I wonder if they remember that moon is moving away...no moon, no tides, no stability in weather, everyone dies

To tell you the truth, I think it was kind of a waste of money. It was $79 million that could have been spent getting fresh drinking water to developping countries, or cancer research or infrastructure repair so concrete slabs will stop falling on people's heads. Or even perhaps just finding a way to make sea water drinkable, hmm?

Right, because rocket scientists, astronauts and physicists can make drinking water and cure cancer. They're doing what they're good at, and they're also trying to give us another option if it turns out that our planet is past the point of no return ecologically.

Not to mention that a large number of our modern conveniences and technologies came from space exploration (think computers, Velcro, TV dinners, numerous medical techniques, etc etc)

That's not what I meant. Where'd they get the money from? Probably the US government and various other sources. In my opinion, there's better ways to use $79 million, no matter who uses it.

And I'm not against space exploration. I just think it's kind of pointless to launch a missile to the moon to look for small frozen particles of ice when there's no clear objective for using such finds.

I really doubt trying to make plans to live on the moon/other planets would be a good idea. No atmosphere means we have to make one and if we have to make one there's a chance it can fail on us and cause mass murder. But of course we'll find out if that'll be the case when it actually becomes a possibility.

My not being in the astrology field, I can't help but wonder if putting a bomb on the moon would've been more effective. It certainly would've been more cheaper...especially if they used Fed-Ex.

The moon is just a stepping stone. It is theoretically possible to make Mars habitable, and there are planets out there that may just support life as we know it - one only about 20 light years away. Now, it would be a one way trip to get there, with our current technology, but that's the kind of thing I'm talking about.

Yes, it could have been used differently, but, as I said, not only could space travel save our race one day (conceivably), but it provides a wealth of new technologies and insights, not least of which is that the moon has a large amount of material in the dust that could, possibly, be used to generate fusion reactions (something we've not been able to effectively do yet, using earthbound materials). If there is water on the moon, this 79 million dollar trip may let us know if we can save several billion dollars later, because we wouldn't have to transport water from earth to the moon, in addition to all the other supplies. Water on the moon may also open up the possibility of hydroponics, making food transport less necessary. I'd say this was a pretty useful mission, myself.

You know, how about we stop spending money developing games, how about we stop spending money on the internet, and we close down shops unless it is for things we really desperately need. How about we live a life so simple it is almost Neolithic. Think of the money we would save that could go towards thing like getting fresh drinking water to developping countries, or cancer research or infrastructure repair so concrete slabs will stop falling on people's heads. Or even perhaps just finding a way to make sea water drinkable, hmm?

Doesn't sound very appealing does it? :B

Sure it cost money and sure some people think that because there weren't pretty firewooks and a big BOOM that it was a waste of resources. I personally think that this could be a great thing, I mean **** :l Imagine if they do find water there. The moon isn't going to become our "new home" but it is one step further towards going further out there and understanding more.

We could stay here forever ignorant never expanding our knowledge and trying to find ways to make sea water drinkable (which btw, we already know how to do, it is one of the most basic things we were taught in science in like 7th grade) OR we could take chances and opportunities.

Don't you want to know more about what is out there? We are ONE planet, in ONE Solar System, I actually hate that by the time we really get into space exploration and understanding the universe that I won't be around.

Wait, wouldn't crashing a rocket into the moon move it away faster?

I don't really care about the reasons, I think it was a bit of a waste and when I heard about it my initial reaction was to go to my science teacher and ask, "What the fuck?"
