I'm doing a paper on the Americans with Disabilities Act. (ADA) Which mostly affects me because while I was born with several disablities that basically almost put me into an instution when I was about two until the act was passed until 1992, would have me right now struggling to read, write, count, and make change.

When I look back at it, I realize in a lot of cases people don't realize the rights they have. If you are a different race, religion, gender, or disabled and in some cases religion, if you lived well over even 100 years ago, a lot of your life today would be different.

As a college student, I wonder what would've happened if I ended up in that instution where a bunch of other kids with less disabilities than I did ended up where they expected you to bang your head against a wall with a helmet on all day.

What are your personal experiences, and how would they have been different do you think if nothing was passed?

wow..I hope that you're okay now, Sara. I have a friend with a hearing disability and he would be a lot lot worse, if the government chose where he went and stuff.

Oh, wow...I hope life is better for you now!

When I was really little, I had a friend who had...er...I guess I was too little to remember, but it was a disability that really made life very difficult for her. I remember thinking about how nice everybody was to her...how, even though her life was so different from everybody else's, we found that we could accept her as a friend in our sunday school class. I really don't think that we would have been able to enjoy her company if we lived a century ago, and it amazes me just how far our society has gone in terms of tolerance...even though there's a lot we'd all like to change in the future.

You really made an excellent point, Sara, and got me to think about this. Thanks.

    Me?

I would have most likely ended up in a mental institution as well. I had minor reading and comprehension problems when I was younger, and was often picked on for it.

But yeah, I wouldn't be here if it weren't passed...

True, I've seen the same in high schools where kids with severe autism used to scream for no reason at the top of their lungs in the room right next to the "special" study hall.

The thing is, nothing is perfect either, Evil_Man. Everything's a double-edged sword. What's a gift is also a curse.

No, nothings perect. I think that disabled people need a bit of special treatment. Like , a bit of compensation from the governmeant and all that.

yea, nothing is perfect. also, at my high school, there were a bunch of LD students that were bullying ppl and nobody could stand up for themselves and hit them back cuz they would get in trouble. those bullies kept beating ppl up cuz they knew that as well. but the law is a good one but needs some tweaking to make it better

Congrats Sara:D ! I had no idea about that, you are a remarkable person-
Society really needs to stop dismissing people with disabilities as 'useless'. Its absolutely horrendous, and downright inhumane. :(

I have a hearing disability, and it's been very annoying when people say stuff like "CAN YOU HEAR ME?" So annoying.

People with disabilities should be helped. Sadly right now though the system is bogged down with fakers that scam insurance and only after they have soaked a ton of money are they caught. Also, some people have been known to get their kids to 'act' out disabilities so they can get free money. Another point is that it sickens me that people who are actually disabled applying for social security benefits because they can't work are delayed for nearly a year before seeing results and are always denied on the first try, BUT someone who is an alcoholic or drug abuser in recovery gets it easy. There are many types of disabilities that can make a person not able to support themselves, at least right away, and I am grateful to the programs that are out there. However, I am sure that we could do better and I know employers can be quite biased against someone with a disability when it comes to hiring, or comprehending at times that person needs time off. I've faced this issue myself, being a disabled veteran. Good luck on your research!
