Have any of you any experience in it? I began lessons today (or yesterday, rather: lesson already had), once a week. Curious, I've not heard of many people horseback riding... perhaps, because they contain themselves usually to the rink; and steer clear of cars and other such things. I'm too timid with the animal, too gentle, and you cannot be overly gentle with a horse, so I've heard. We'll see where this goes.

lol I had to watch that on mute since roommate is asleep.....too funny.

I have only ridden a horse a couple times but here are a few tips

-Begin with a walk, and gently squeeze your calves on the horse to get it to start walking.
-Keep your chin up and your shoulders perpendicular to the horse's back. Keep your heels down while riding the horse. This position is like a brake for you, to prevent yourself from falling if the horse comes to a sudden stop.
-Allow yourself to move with the horse's movements. Don't try to move too much as this may disorient the horse and make it uncomfortable.
-Looking in the direction you want to go will guide the horse towards the same. Horses are known to discern even minor movements easily, so ensure you are looking in the right direction. Ensure the reins are in your hand. You may gently tug them to get the horse to turn in the direction you want. Do not tug too hard.
-To stop, tug the reins and sit tightly on the horse. You may require to lean back from the perpendicular position to prevent yourself from falling. Also, sink your heels into the stirrups to control your body movement. Gently pat the horse on the back as an appreciative gesture for obeying you.

Don't know if these help any :)
    Super cool you are learning!

If you include pony trekking then aye. The last time I did it was when I was 14 and the damn horse kept trying to eat me. So they had to get a handler to keep it under control. Then it tried to eat her too. And it was walking into barrels and fences...I will never forget you Bubbles the man eating horse. >|

I ride horses when we go to this one place out of town and we go on a trail. It's very fun. I'm nowhere near someone who knows how to ride but I can get the horse to gallop, run, walk. Just never took professional classes.

But I love horseback riding and I wish I did take classes. Nothing I can complain about.
I wish I could ride more often. Just wear jeans when you horseback ride - found out the hard way derp. And get nice comfy non-metal secured saddles cause once you get off the horse, your legs will look like they have been beaten up by gremlins.
They pee and poop a lot too.

I did some riding when I was in boy scouts. I enjoyed it a lot and miss so. All I can tell is that you will in enjoy it a lot. At first if you don't know what your doing it can be a little scary having that big ole animal under, but once you get the hang of it , it's amazing. You will be happy you did this.
