Here's an easy one for you.
I am a famous American rock group, bigger than Jimi Hendrix ever was. All of our four members are dead; one of us was assassinated.

Come on man, that's not much of a riddle, more of a hint.

The answer is an Opium Poppy flower itself.
Opium is a dried latex byproduct of an Opium Poppy, but not the product itself. Smell the flower, deal in the trade of it, and it was those who supplied it who weren't registered were likely doing so for drug trade, and deny that they supply any in case of punishment. A strong connection to drugs but not a drug. I'm happy you were persitent.

 

I tried. It was a good one, but a hard one, at that. The same could be said of many plants that drugs are made from, but not in the smelling the flowers sense.

I was going to answer "a troll" to Pillows' riddle.
