Would you want a chat system implied?

  1. Yes, I believe that a chat system would be more convenient and enjoyable.

  2. No, the site is modeled enough after popular social networking sites/We do not need any more change.

Could this possibly be done with Xenforo? I still think it would be a good idea, and a much better alternative to visitor messages.

    Anybody for or against it?

If this is a legitimate suggestion for the site (maybe it's not), then would you not prefer to have it in a more serious section? You don't have to, but if you want serious consideration...

More chance of it being seen here, and if there are enough people, then I guess it'd be better suited in Suggestions, with a link back to this thread.

    Edit: There's this one

Thought I'd get more views here, since there is a majority of members who like to sit in the Spam Zone, waiting for action. (Not me.)

It is a legitimate suggestion. If you feel it belongs in the Forum Suggestion section, then by all means, move it.

One of the problems with chats on a forum is they're easily overloaded with members and trolls would have a ball with them. You wouldn't have a staff member there all the time to regulate the chat. At the moment we're using skype and it works just fine. If members want to join in all they need to do is ask.

It would be more of a Facebook style chat, in which only the people you follow (or if they follow you) can start a chat with you. It wouldn't just be a chat pool filled with every member online.

Looking at Nate's link, I guess this will be a shoutbox. That's not what I had in mind, but if anybody else is for it, then okay.

There's also the problem that some people don't have Skype, and they shouldn't be obligated to make an account if they want to talk with any member.

That would take up additional server resources which could slow down the server and increase costs for the server. If folk want to talk then they can use the conversation feature or use something like facebook.

It doesn't have to be skype. Most cases, everyone here has an account to something with IM. It just so happens that at the moment a group of us are using skype. You've awready been given a way to talk with folk, if you want something more suited to your needs then you should take it outwith the site.

It's not for me. It's for anyone else that feels that they might want to use something faster or closer to the site.

I'm fine with the way it is right now. It's just asking if anybody else wants it.

That argument has always annoyed me some since it applies to everything. It would make more sense to me to put the thread where it is designed to go and then advertise it in the Spamzone. But whatever, nothing wrong with this way per se. Just less organized and harder to moderate.

Actually that was a command. You should calm the down sweets.

I feel like we'd benefit from a better chat system, though we're already modeled after Facebook.

Depends on what you consider to be us considering something. It is one of the most requested features, but I'm not sure staff has ever said that the suggestion was going anywhere.

    Yeah.

Everyone is right though, if you want the suggestion seriously considered or discussed, it would be better to post it in the Suggestions forum.

We have always said no to a large chatbox for the site because it would require heavy moderation. Our stance remains the same. We simply can't provide 24/7 coverage of a chatbox; as such, members are free to create their own chatrooms, but these rooms are independent of and unassociated with KH-Vids, other than the fact that there is member overlap.

A chat system between members only on your contact list may be convenient, but again, that's server resources. We already have a lot of functionality for chatting between your friends (profile posts, personal conversations, and of course the forums themselves), with more on the way; if those options are insufficient, it's probably best to move to a system like Skype that is designed for instant messaging.
